and Subacute Asthenia.Diagnostic criteria for neurasthenia <strong>in</strong>clude: Persistent<br />
and distress<strong>in</strong>g symptoms of exhaustion after m<strong>in</strong>or mental or physical effort<br />
<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g general feel<strong>in</strong>g of malaise, comb<strong>in</strong>ed with a mixed state of excitement<br />
and depression. Accompanied by one or more of these symptoms: muscular<br />
aches and pa<strong>in</strong>s, dizz<strong>in</strong>ess, tension headache, sleep disturbance, <strong>in</strong>ability to<br />
relax and irritability. Inability to recover through rest, relaxation or enjoyment.<br />
Disturbed and restless, unrefresh<strong>in</strong>g sleep, often troubled with dreams. Duration<br />
of over three months. Does not occur <strong>in</strong> the presence of organic mental<br />
disorders, affective disorder, panic or generalized anxiety disorder.<br />
The cause of Neurasthenia rema<strong>in</strong> unknown however like most disorders,<br />
certa<strong>in</strong> predispos<strong>in</strong>g factors may play an important part, chief of which may be<br />
mentioned heredity factors, occupation (high stress occupations), age (tends to<br />
occurs between 20 and 55 years of age), and sex predom<strong>in</strong>antly see <strong>in</strong> male<br />
Sub Types:<br />
Cerebral. - Headaches are the prom<strong>in</strong>ent symptom. Insomnia is quite<br />
characteristic, and the patient arises unrefreshed; there is more or less<br />
despondency; the patient is anxious, worried, and fearful, anxious of some<br />
impend<strong>in</strong>g danger. A cont<strong>in</strong>ued tired feel<strong>in</strong>g is generally present.<br />
Sp<strong>in</strong>al. - . Backache, with tenderness along the sp<strong>in</strong>e, is characteristic. Other<br />
manifestations may <strong>in</strong>clude t<strong>in</strong>gl<strong>in</strong>g, crawl<strong>in</strong>g, or burn<strong>in</strong>g sensation, or certa<strong>in</strong><br />
parts will feel hot or cold.<br />
Gastro-Intest<strong>in</strong>al - Gastric disturbances are the chief characteristics of this form.<br />
Hyperacidity, waterbrash, nausea, retch<strong>in</strong>g, and vomit<strong>in</strong>g. The patient sleeps<br />
poorly, has unpleasant dreams, and develops an irritable disposition. There is<br />
flatulency, rumbl<strong>in</strong>g of the bowels, constipation may alternated with diarrhea,<br />
and a sense of weight or soreness over the abdomen.<br />
Cardiac - While there is no organic reason, the person may experience<br />
palpitations and sometimes sharp pa<strong>in</strong> similar to ang<strong>in</strong>a.<br />
Ur<strong>in</strong>ary - The quantity of ur<strong>in</strong>e expelled is usually small. The patient becomes<br />
irritable, and experience dull headaches.<br />
Sexual - A fear of becom<strong>in</strong>g impotent preys upon the m<strong>in</strong>d, the patient is<br />
depressed, sleeps poorly, has nocturnal emissions, compla<strong>in</strong>s of pa<strong>in</strong> or crawl<strong>in</strong>g<br />
sensations <strong>in</strong> the testicles, has perverted sexual desires, and frequently<br />
masturbates.<br />
Associated Features:<br />
May experience rapid <strong>in</strong>tense heartbeat that may be irregular (palpitations,<br />
tachycardia).<br />
Cold extremities, clammy hands and feet.<br />
Abnormally rapid breath<strong>in</strong>g (hyperventilat<strong>in</strong>g).<br />
Dizz<strong>in</strong>ess or fa<strong>in</strong>tness.<br />
Periodic sigh<strong>in</strong>g<br />
Sweat<strong>in</strong>g for no apparent reason.<br />
Be restless fidget<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
Over-sensitivity.<br />
Differential Diagnosis:<br />
Depression. Generalized Anxiety Disorder. Somatic Compla<strong>in</strong>ts. Other<br />
psychosomatic conditions.<br />
Neurosis Also known as psychoneurosis or neurotic disorder, is a "catch all" term that<br />
refers to any mental imbalance that causes distres, but, unlike a psychosis or<br />
personality disorder, does not prevent rational thought or an <strong>in</strong>dividual's ability<br />
to function <strong>in</strong> daily life.There are many different specific forms of neuroses:<br />
pyromania, obsessive-compulsive disorder, anxiety neurosis, hysteria (<strong>in</strong> which<br />
