It is just half a century since, in the pages <strong>of</strong> this review,<br />
Macaulay wrote his great essay upon the Papacy. <strong>The</strong> moment<br />
<strong>of</strong> the appearance <strong>of</strong> that remarkable contribution to ecclesiastical<br />
history gives to it now a peculiar value. <strong>The</strong> year 1840<br />
stands halfway between the French Revolution and the present<br />
day, but the changes which have taken place in the world<br />
since the commencement <strong>of</strong> the Victorian era have brought<br />
with them greater and swifter alterations in the political status<br />
<strong>of</strong> the Church and in its relations with the peoples <strong>of</strong> the earth<br />
than have occurred not only in the previous half-century, but<br />
probably in all the previous ages since the foundation <strong>of</strong><br />
Christianity.<br />
It would be foreign to our purpose to describe the position<br />
<strong>of</strong> the Roman <strong>Catholic</strong> Church among the nations fifty years<br />
