NEW RUSSIAN IMPERIAL
VERBENA JEWELRY In 1872, Peter
Carl Fabergé (Russian, 1846–1920)
and his brother took over their father’s
small jewelry atelier. Growing it into
a global enterprise, they cultivated
an elite clientele that included the
Romanovs, the Russian Imperial
Family. Among the workshop’s
many exquisite creations is an
opulent yet fanciful potted
verbena plant of gold, silver,
enamel, diamonds, and
semiprecious stones,
adapted for our charming
LOTUS COLLECTION
The humorous theatrical tradition
known as Kyogen was originally
performed as comic relief during
intermissions in the more serious
Noh drama. Reflecting its
bombastic acting style, Kyogen
costumes are noted for their
bold, resist-dyed patterns, as
seen in the lotus design of an
early 19th-century suo (jacket)
in the Museum’s collection.
Once worn by an actor playing a
samurai lord, it is the source for
the striking lotus flowers on our
as eastern North America, the lotus, which grows from
the mud yet blooms radiantly, is a symbol of rebirth and
Buddhism, and Confucianism. It is a frequent motif
in Asian art of many cultures and eras. Lotus images
are prevalent throughout the Museum’s collection. 24
China from India, the lotus—which grows from the slime
of a pond yet blooms unsullied—is a Buddhist symbol
nature of physical beauty. Our lovely scarf adapts a
detail from Lotus and Water Birds (ca. 1300), two
hanging scrolls in the Museum’s collection, highlighting
a midsummer scene of budding lotus flowers. Silk crêpe
Due to its position on major trade routes
Javanese kingdom was the most powerful
Southeast Asian kingdom of its time,
establishing the great classical style of
Indonesian art between the 8th and the
lotus, a flower honored in many Asian
traditions. Its ancient design is the
EXPLORING THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN FASHION AND ART, THIS ELOQUENT EXHIBITION
looks at fashion’s role in the works of the Impressionists and their contemporaries. The time period is the
mid-1860s to the mid-1880s, when Paris emerged as the style capital of the world, and the department
store, fashion magazines, and the concept of ready-made wear were all on the rise. Presented are some
75 major figure paintings interspersed with period costumes, accessories, fashion plates, photographs, and
popular prints, illustrating how the avant-garde—from Manet, Monet, and Renoir to Baudelaire, Mallarmé,
and Zola—turned a fresh eye to contemporary dress as the herald of la modernité.
CHARLES FREDERICK WORTH BOW
began in mid-19th-century Paris, certain fashion
designers became both revered as artists and
sought after as celebrities. Charles Frederick
Worth (French, 1825–1895) was one of these,
and his Paris shop was frequented by the great
ladies of the day. A Worth silk evening gown
NEW PEARL ROSETTE JEWELRY During a career that spanned
six decades, Louis C. Tiffany (American, 1848–1933) embraced
virtually every artistic and decorative medium, designing and directing
his studios to produce leaded-glass windows, mosaics, lamps, glass,
pottery, metalwork, enamels, jewelry, and interiors. In 1914, Meta K.
Overbeck became head designer of his “art jewelry” department. The
design for this enchanting rosette suite is based on a drawing from a
surviving volume of her distinctive designs. Produced in cooperation
D. AUGUSTUS
SAINT-GAUDENS:
DIANA Architect Stanford
White commissioned Augustus
Saint-Gaudens (American, 1848–
1907), one of the greatest sculptors
of his day, to create a weather vane
for the tower of Madison Square
Garden. White thought the original
18-foot gilded bronze figure, erected
in 1891, was too large, and a year later
it was replaced with a smaller version
that towered over the New York skyline
until the building was razed in 1925.
Later on, Saint-Gaudens created three
reduced variant editions of Diana
and our gleaming figure reproduces
one of these smaller versions, a
jewel of the Museum’s American
Cats were domesticated in Egypt by at
least Dynasty 12 (just after 2000 B.C.) and
seen some 550 years later in Dynasty 18
also appear as motifs in jewelry, as in
a dramatic pair of cuff bracelets in the
Museum's collection with recumbent cats
in gold and carnelian. Our delightful pin is
based on these ancient felines. 22K matte
gold overlay. 1 5/8"L x 1 1/4"W.
E. NEW EGYPTIAN LOTUS COLUMN
SCARF During the Museum’s Egyptian
Expedition from 1907 to 1937, graphic
Thebes. Among these is a scene from the
New Kingdom tomb of Amenhotep III, ninth
pharaoh of Dynasty 18 (ca. 1390–1353 B.C.).
Our vivid scarf reproduces the banded
columns and stylized lotus capitals seen
in this facsimile. Silk crêpe de chine.
75 YEARS OF MEDIEVAL SPLENDOR
THE CURATOR’S VIEW:
IN 2013, THE CLOISTERS MUSEUM AND GARDENS REACHES
A WONDERFUL MILESTONE: OUR 75TH ANNIVERSARY. As the
unique branch of the Metropolitan Museum dedicated to the art
and architecture of medieval Europe, The Cloisters first opened its
doors in 1938. Since then, generations of visitors have enjoyed our
scenic setting in northern Manhattan and explored our renowned
collections. This year, we will celebrate with special exhibitions
devoted to the legend of the mythical unicorn and stained glass
from Canterbury Cathedral—even a contemporary sound installation.
State-of-the-art renovations, new acquisitions, and a new guide have
prepared us for an exciting future.
MASTER AMERICAN PORTRAITIST
GILBERT STUART
AMERICA’S LONG STRUGGLE FOR INDEPENDENCE ISOLATED THE COUNTRY ARTISTICALLY AS WELL
AS COMMERCIALLY. But in the years that followed, many painters who had fled to Europe returned home,
among them Gilbert Stuart (American, 1755–1828), who had become one of the most sought-after painters
in London and Dublin. Stuart rose to prominence during the early years of the American republic, turning his
abundant natural talent to the representation of human likeness and character. His success painting the rich and
famous was perfectly timed for the people of the United States, who—proud of their young republic—were eager
to display symbols of patriotism, from the nation’s seal to the bald eagle to images of well-known Americans.
Especially notable within the revered realm
of Japanese lacquerwork is the technique
of maki-e, achieved through the painstaking
application of gold or silver powder to the
remarkable subtlety and delicacy. A Museum
maki-e lacquer box (ca. 1800) is adorned
with golden bamboo leaves, the source
for our enchanting shawl and top.
D. RODIN: ADAM In 1880, sculptor Auguste Rodin
(French, 1840–1917) received his first commission from the
French government for an immense work based loosely on
Dante’s Divine Comedy. It was never finished or cast during
Rodin’s lifetime, but a sketchbook in the Musée Rodin in Paris
contains a study for the piece, The Gates of Hell, showing
the gates flanked by standing figures. Poignant images from
this sketch show a dejected Eve and an anguished Adam,
reflecting mankind’s fall from grace. The Museum’s Adam was
cast in bronze (ca. 1910) from Rodin’s original models for this
epic project (1880 and 1881). Our hand-cast reproduction is
bonded bronze and hand patinated. 15"H x 6"W x 5 1/2"D.
E. NEW AMERICAN TIMEPIECE CUFF LINKS As the
availability of mass-produced consumer goods increased in
19th-century America, merchants circulated trade catalogues
to entice customers with their wares. One such publication,
the charming Circular M Will Replenish Your Stock, from
the Museum’s collection, pictures a clock that we have
adapted for our clever cuff links, each with a fully functioning
timepiece. Stainless-steel case. Quartz movement. 3/4" diam.
G. NEW WILLIAM MORRIS
FLORALS SCARF William Morris (British,
1834–1896) founded his eponymous firm in 1861
to design and produce a full range of household goods.
Many of his dense patterns were inspired by nature, such as
those seen in our graceful scarf. Its featured print is based on Violet
and Columbine, a wool textile, while its border is adapted from Pink
and Rose, a woodblock-printed wallpaper, both from the Museum’s
collection. Silk crêpe de chine. Imported. 18" x 64". 80-018139 $65
AND ROSE ACCESSORIES Though
his mission was to marry fine design with
everyday objects of many categories, it is
William Morris’s wallpaper designs that form
the heart of his legacy. Pink and Rose, a
characteristically intricate hand-block-printed
wallpaper (ca. 1890), illustrates his belief
that beauty, imagination, and order are the
essential elements of a successful design.
