A. TIBETAN PENDANT NECKLACE Among the jewelry given to<br />

The Costume Institute by a renowned collector is a mesmerizing necklace <strong>of</strong><br />

irregular turquoise stones from Tibet (probably 19th century). Reflecting the<br />

donor’s knowledge <strong>of</strong> jewelry-making cultures, this imposing piece is the source<br />

for our singular adaptation. 18K gold overlay with reconstituted turquoise.<br />

Hook-and-eye closure. Pendant 2 1/2"L x 2 1/4"W; 18"L with 2" extender.<br />

B. NEW MUQARNAS TILE OPENWORK COLLAR TOP The delicate<br />

cutwork neckline <strong>of</strong> our feminine top reflects the lacy pattern on a carved<br />

muqarnas tile in the <strong>Museum</strong>’s collection. During the second half <strong>of</strong> the 14th<br />

century, in the city <strong>of</strong> Samarqand (in present-day Uzbekistan), such tiles were<br />

used to artfully fill the supports between a square room and its domed ceiling.<br />

PERSIAN OPENWORK JEWELRY Persian artists created many<br />

masterpieces <strong>of</strong> late medieval Islamic art and architecture. Their<br />

breathtaking artistry and skill are illustrated by two cylindrical hair<br />

ornaments (12th–13th century) in the <strong>Museum</strong>’s collection. Attributed<br />

to the city <strong>of</strong> Gurgan in northern Iran, they feature intricate openwork<br />

that we have adapted for our elegant jewelry. 22K gold overlay.<br />
