The following year, three artists published
what became the bible of Art Nouveau
design, Combinaisons Ornementales. This
comprehensive portfolio presents hundreds
of decorative elements, illustrating the curves
and complexities of the Art Nouveau style. Our
sumptuous jewelry is adapted from a pochoir
(stencil) print in this Museum album.

capital of the world. This period also
witnessed the rise of the department
store, the advent of ready-to-wear,
and the growth of a market hungry
for the latest fashion trends. A
length of fringed silk from the
time (French, 1870–80), in the
Museum’s collection, displays
the lavish woven roses
adapted for our jacquard
shawl with its silky and
subtle sheen. Silk/wool/
