H. CHINESE BUTTERFLIES EMBROIDERED JEWELRY
embroidery on our elegant jewelry roll is based on this Museum
original. Silk. Imported. Tie closure with four pockets and a ring bar.
I. JAPANESE OBI BUTTERFLIES TOP The Japanese cherish
the traditional kimono as a cultural symbol and still wear it for special
occasions. A mid-20th-century silk obi (kimono sash) in the Museum’s
collection displays a stylized print of chocho (butterflies), a favorite motif
in Japanese art and poetry. Our bright top adapts its pretty pattern. Cap
sleeves. Slim fit. Cotton/spandex. Made in the US. Machine wash. $45
BUTTERFLIES SCARF
J. NEW SCHIAPARELLI BUTTERFLIES SCARF
The butterfly, morphing from ugly to beautiful, became the Surrealist
symbol for change. Elsa Schiaparelli’s (Italian, 1890–1973) brilliant butterfly
print was inspired by the Surrealist artists with whom she shared many
views, such as Salvador Dalí, Max Ernst, and Man Ray. She used it
for a number of pieces, including a silk evening dress from
her 1937 summer collection, now in
The Costume Institute. Our vibrant
scarf re-creates this luminous
print. Silk crêpe de chine.
Imported. 18" x 64".
80-018272 $65
