H. ROHDE DECO WATCH In the early<br />
1930s, designer Gilbert Rohde (American,<br />
1894–1944) was hired by the Herman<br />
Miller Furniture Company to create a line <strong>of</strong><br />
sophisticated yet affordable furnishings in the<br />
popular <strong>Art</strong> Deco style. Among Rohde’s designs<br />
was a clock <strong>of</strong> chrome and rosewood veneer,<br />
now in the <strong>Museum</strong>’s collection, and the basis for<br />
our sleek watch. Alloy and stainless-steel case, a<br />

19th-century French design created by the<br />
House <strong>of</strong> Robin as part <strong>of</strong> a collection called<br />
Fantaisies—jewelry combining historic and<br />
romantic themes with motifs from nature.<br />

E–F. FRENCH DECO COLLECTION In the <strong>Museum</strong>’s<br />
Costume Institute are original copies <strong>of</strong> Gazette du bon ton:<br />
art, modes & frivolités, a luxury periodical published in<br />
Paris from 1912 to 1925. This gathering <strong>of</strong> elegant fashions<br />
utilized the technique <strong>of</strong> pochoir (hand-colored stenciling)<br />
to reproduce creations by top designers <strong>of</strong> the day. Our<br />
watch and magnifier are based on whimsical illustrations<br />
<strong>of</strong> jewelry and accessories from this publication.<br />

D. ART DECO GEOMETRIC SHAWL Multitalented and<br />
enigmatic, artist Sarah Lipska (Polish, 1882–1973) moved in<br />
1912 to France, where she sketched costumes and sets for<br />
Léon Bakst and the Ballets Russes. She later devoted herself<br />
to fashion, interiors, and sculpture. The <strong>Museum</strong>’s collection<br />
includes a rare Lipska wool textile with an <strong>Art</strong> Deco design<br />
embroidered in subtly light-reflective materials. Our<br />
stunning burnout shawl re-creates its intricate pattern.<br />
