LATE HELLENISTIC CARNELIAN
JEWELRY By Late Hellenistic times, the Greek
practice of burying the wealthy and powerful with
their jewelry was less common than in previous
periods. The Museum’s collection includes a
fine rare parure (matching set) of a necklace
and earrings of gold and agate with large garnet
cabochons (Late Hellenistic, 1st century B.C.),
the source for our bold, beautiful adaptations.
24K gold overlay with carnelian stones.
Earrings 3/4"L. 80-011509 $65
Necklace Lobster claw closure. 18"L.
LATE CLASSICAL GREEK BRACELET
Classical Greek jewelry tended to exclude
gemstones and most surviving pieces are
of gold, with rarer extant examples in silver
and bronze. An intricate silver bracelet with a
gold stud (Late Classical, ca. 350–300 B.C.) has
been adapted for our beguiling bangle. 24K gold
overlay with a garnet stone. Hinged with a boxand-tongue
closure. 6 1/2" inner circ.; 1/2"W.
80-011512 $150
C. NEW THE THREE GRACES Created in
the 2nd century A.D., the Museum’s friezelike
marble sculpture The Three Graces is a
Roman copy of a Greek statue group from the
2nd century B.C. Three young girls, linked in
a dance-like pose, represent Aglaia (Beauty),
Euphrosyne (Mirth), and Thalia (Abundance),
handmaidens to Aphrodite, the goddess of love
and beauty. Our reproduction deftly captures
the elegant sensuality of these graceful figures.
Cast resin, hand patinated. 10"H x 10"W
x 3 3/4"D. 80-017478 $195
D. NEW BOSCOREALE WALL PAINTING SCARF
Among the most important frescoes to survive the
Roman world are the Museum’s panels from a
villa at Boscoreale (Roman, Late Republican,
ca. 50–40 B.C.) in the region of Campania.
Our enchanting scarf is based on the
rich colors and luxury of the trompe
l’oeil scene painted on one of these
panels. Silk crêpe de chine.
Imported. 20" x 64".
