A–B. NEW JAPANESE
LOTUS COLLECTION
The humorous theatrical tradition
known as Kyogen was originally
performed as comic relief during
intermissions in the more serious
Noh drama. Reflecting its
bombastic acting style, Kyogen
costumes are noted for their
bold, resist-dyed patterns, as
seen in the lotus design of an
early 19th-century suo (jacket)
in the Museum’s collection.
Once worn by an actor playing a
samurai lord, it is the source for
the striking lotus flowers on our
jacket and shawl. Imported.
as eastern North America, the lotus, which grows from
the mud yet blooms radiantly, is a symbol of rebirth and
Buddhism, and Confucianism. It is a frequent motif
in Asian art of many cultures and eras. Lotus images
are prevalent throughout the Museum’s collection. 24
LOTUS
SCARF
C. NEW BUDDING LOTUS SCARF Imported to
China from India, the lotus—which grows from the slime
of a pond yet blooms unsullied—is a Buddhist symbol
of purity and rebirth, also representing the ephemeral
nature of physical beauty. Our lovely scarf adapts a
detail from Lotus and Water Birds (ca. 1300), two
hanging scrolls in the Museum’s collection, highlighting
a midsummer scene of budding lotus flowers. Silk crêpe
de chine. Imported. 18" x 66". 80-018137 $65
