A–E. QING BUTTERFLY JEWELRY
When the Manchus took over China, they
established the Qing (“pure”) dynasty
(1644–1911), which became a period of
great artistic achievement. A 19th-century
album in the Museum’s collection by an
anonymous artist includes 12 delicate
paintings of butterflies, a popular theme in
Chinese art, symbolizing summer, romance,
and dreams. Our vivid jewelry is based on
butterfly images in this rare Qing album.

F–G. NEW BUTTERFLIES COLLECTION A pioneer in the development
of chromolithography, Louis Prang (American, 1824–1909) established his
printing company in 1860 in Boston. L. Prang & Co. produced trade cards,
announcements, and later advertising, maps, and, most famously, Christmas
cards. The exuberant butterflies winging across these colorful accessories are
based on The Butterflies and Moths of America (1860 and 1862), a series
of Prang’s album cards in the Museum’s collection.
