A printing stamp in the Museum’s collection, used to mark textiles before such details were added, illustrates a scroll design derived from the ornamentation applied to military uniforms. CHARLES FREDERICK WORTH BOW AND PEARL JEWELRY When haute couture began in mid-19th-century Paris, certain fashion designers became both revered as artists and sought after as celebrities. Charles Frederick Worth (French, 1825–1895) was one of these, and his Paris shop was frequented by the great ladies of the day. A Worth silk evening gown from 1888 in the Museum’s Costume Institute is lavished with metallic embroidered bows adorned with beads and sequins.
