Bridging Cultural differenCes How cultural diversity can create a more productive workplace In any given workplace, there definitely exist workers of more than one cultural background. In this cultural mixing bowl of fellow human beings, conflicts and arguments may arise for one careless remark or one insensitive gesture. Yet, research from a survey conducted by the Society of Human Resource Management and Fortune reported that diversity in the workplace: • Improves corporate culture • Improves employee morale • Increases creativity • Enables movement to emerging markets Improves productivity Research has also indicated that teams comprised of diverse members outperform consistent teams and tend to exude more creativity and problem solving ability. However, diverse teams need to be managed well, as communication and trust can break down, resulting in lower performance for the entire group. Stemming from different cultural backgrounds, each individual staff member has a key strength that will add value to a particular project.
