<strong>the</strong> causes <strong>of</strong> infecti<strong>on</strong> and implementing anti-epidemic initiatives) has sharply decreased over<br />

<strong>the</strong> past few years due to <strong>the</strong> complexity <strong>of</strong> work with <strong>the</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>risk</str<strong>on</strong>g> groups menti<strong>on</strong>ed above.<br />

• When HIV cases are grouped by transmissi<strong>on</strong> route in nati<strong>on</strong>al statistical documents, 20-30%<br />

annually fall into <strong>the</strong> “Data Unavailable” category, so <strong>the</strong> probability that parenteral transmissi<strong>on</strong><br />

prevails in this group is very high.<br />

Investigati<strong>on</strong> into <strong>the</strong> HIV epidemic am<strong>on</strong>g <strong>women</strong> is <strong>the</strong>refore very important if we are to understand<br />

<strong>the</strong> trends <strong>of</strong> HIV <strong>spread</strong> in Russia.<br />

PROJECT GOAL:<br />

Identify trends in HIV <strong>spread</strong> am<strong>on</strong>g <strong>the</strong> female populati<strong>on</strong> in several high-prevalence areas in <strong>the</strong><br />

Russia, through in-depth epidemiological and sociological analysis.<br />

HIV-positive <strong>pregnant</strong> <strong>women</strong> were selected as <strong>the</strong> target group due to <strong>the</strong> accessibility <strong>of</strong> this group<br />

and its social relevance.<br />

PROJECT TASKS:<br />

RISK FACTORS IMPACTING ON THE SPREAD OF HIV AMONG PREGNANT WOMEN IN THE RUSSIAN FEDERATION<br />

1. Investigate behavioural <str<strong>on</strong>g>risk</str<strong>on</strong>g>s am<strong>on</strong>g <strong>the</strong> target group <strong>of</strong> <strong>women</strong> at <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> HIV diagnosis<br />

(injecting drugs, multiple sexual partners, n<strong>on</strong>-regular sexual partners, commercial sex, use <strong>of</strong><br />

c<strong>on</strong>doms during intercourse)<br />

2. Estimate <strong>the</strong> percentage <strong>of</strong> traditi<strong>on</strong>al <str<strong>on</strong>g>risk</str<strong>on</strong>g> groups (IDUs, SWs’ clients, pris<strong>on</strong>ers, HIV-positives)<br />

am<strong>on</strong>g sexual partners <strong>of</strong> <strong>women</strong> from <strong>the</strong> target group<br />

3. Evaluate <strong>the</strong> probable transmissi<strong>on</strong> routes am<strong>on</strong>g <strong>the</strong> target group members (sexual transmissi<strong>on</strong>,<br />

parenteral transmissi<strong>on</strong>)<br />

4. Investigate behavioural changes am<strong>on</strong>g <strong>women</strong> living with HIV
