RISK FACTORS IMPACTING ON THE SPREAD OF HIV AMONG PREGNANT WOMEN IN THE RUSSIAN FEDERATION<br />

Only an insignificant proporti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> female IDUs reported occasi<strong>on</strong>ally injecting drugs after being<br />

diagnosed with HIV. Only isolated hepatitis cases were identified.<br />

The investigati<strong>on</strong> into <strong>the</strong> socio-demographic and behavioural status <strong>of</strong> <strong>women</strong> at <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> diagnosis<br />

showed that every seventh HIV-positive woman in Tver was an IDU, every sec<strong>on</strong>d had sexual<br />

partners who were IDUs, and every sixth had HIV-positive sexual partners. Most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> target group<br />

at <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> diagnosis were receiving antenatal care; in every sec<strong>on</strong>d case <strong>the</strong> serо-positive status<br />

was identified within <strong>the</strong> first trimester <strong>of</strong> pregnancy. After HIV diagnosis, <strong>the</strong>re were marked positive<br />

behavioural changes with respect to HIV infecti<strong>on</strong>/transmissi<strong>on</strong>.<br />
