RISK FACTORS IMPACTING ON THE SPREAD OF HIV AMONG PREGNANT WOMEN IN THE RUSSIAN FEDERATION<br />

Only 34.2% <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>women</strong> with experience <strong>of</strong> injecting drugs before HIV diagnosis did not use any<strong>on</strong>e<br />

else’s injecti<strong>on</strong> equipment. 36.8% reported having occasi<strong>on</strong>ally used some<strong>on</strong>e else’s equipment;<br />

18.4% did so approximately half <strong>the</strong> time, and 5.3% – in most instances. Half <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m cleaned<br />

syringes and needles before injecti<strong>on</strong> always or in most cases (20% and 30% respectively).<br />

Only 30% <strong>of</strong> <strong>women</strong> always used clean needles or syringes for injecting drugs; 40.8% did so in most<br />

instances; 27.6% – <strong>on</strong>ly occasi<strong>on</strong>ally.<br />

Before being diagnosed, over half <strong>the</strong> <strong>women</strong> passed <strong>the</strong>ir used syringes and needles to o<strong>the</strong>r IDUs<br />

for injecting drugs, 43.4% did so occasi<strong>on</strong>ally, 11.8% in most instances. 68.4% reported always having<br />

<strong>the</strong> opportunity to buy clean syringes.<br />

39.5% <strong>of</strong> resp<strong>on</strong>dents had had experience <strong>of</strong> injecting <strong>the</strong> drug from a syringe filled for ano<strong>the</strong>r pers<strong>on</strong>.<br />

About 40% occasi<strong>on</strong>ally used comm<strong>on</strong> c<strong>on</strong>tainers for preparing <strong>the</strong> drug; 15.8% in most<br />

instances, and 13.2% <strong>of</strong> resp<strong>on</strong>dents always. Only <strong>on</strong>e fifth <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>women</strong> had never drawn up <strong>the</strong><br />

drug from a comm<strong>on</strong> c<strong>on</strong>tainer; 38.2% did so occasi<strong>on</strong>ally; 21.1% in most instances, 14.5% always.<br />

31.6% estimated <strong>the</strong>ir drug-using behaviour before being diagnosed with HIV as unsafe ra<strong>the</strong>r than<br />

safe, 2.6% as very unsafe. 63.2% during this period were diagnosed with hepatitis С (more than average).<br />

22.4% had hepatitis В.<br />

After HIV diagnosis, <strong>the</strong>re were no significant changes in alcohol use am<strong>on</strong>g <strong>women</strong> interviewed in<br />

St Petersburg (unlike o<strong>the</strong>r cities which tended towards a decrease in use). 42.4% did not use alcohol;<br />

21.2% used alcohol several times a year; 20.5% – several times a m<strong>on</strong>th.<br />

The proporti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>women</strong> injecting drugs decreased after HIV diagnosis. 33.9% had given up injecting<br />

drugs before diagnosis and had been in remissi<strong>on</strong> for over 3 years. O<strong>the</strong>rs had given up injecting<br />

drugs 3 years or less before <strong>the</strong> survey: 68.4% <strong>of</strong> <strong>women</strong> stopped injecting drugs immediately after HIV<br />

diagnosis, while 30.3% c<strong>on</strong>tinued to use drugs. At <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> survey 15.2% <strong>of</strong> <strong>women</strong> with experience<br />

<strong>of</strong> injecting drugs in Saint Petersburg sample was still doing so (Fig. 4).<br />
