identity. The Newfoundl<strong>and</strong> example is necessarily uneventful <strong>and</strong> narrow <strong>in</strong> its scope. Other casestudies<br />

could be more reward<strong>in</strong>g for their broader context or for the number of questions raised -- the<br />

Avalon colony, Laval's appo<strong>in</strong>tment, the Conquest of Canada, the establishment of the new <strong>America</strong><br />

republic, <strong>to</strong> mention only some of the examples already <strong>to</strong>uched upon. To approach our subject <strong>in</strong> more<br />

general terms would be as mean<strong>in</strong>gless as <strong>to</strong> exam<strong>in</strong>e the so-called "real" impact of France <strong>and</strong> Engl<strong>and</strong><br />

upon the his<strong>to</strong>rical development of <strong>North</strong> <strong>America</strong>. There certa<strong>in</strong>ly was an impact, if only because<br />

France <strong>and</strong> Engl<strong>and</strong> (like the Holy See) enjoyed a two-way relationship with the New World. To go<br />

beyond that simple assertion, however, <strong>in</strong>volves a deeper exam<strong>in</strong>ation of case-studies, from which new<br />

assumptions can be drawn.<br />
