MOTORING land Rover comes to Peckforton Peckforton Castle may have established itself as one of the UK’s most spectacular wedding venues, but it has far more attractions – and the latest one will be of particular interest to anyone who, like me, gets more excited about cars than weddings… Over the many years I’ve been writing about motoring for this magazine, I’ve been nothing if not biased. My all-time favourite vehicle is the Land Rover, and I’ve been known to say so on more than one occasion. The chance to drive one in such a unique location, right on my doorstep, promised therefore to be something truly memorable. Peckforton Castle sits on a hill surrounded by an estate of magnificent Cheshire forest, with some privately owned trails that take you to some of the highest points and best views in the county. The whole place is perfect for taking a Land Rover to its limits – and that’s obviously something the estate owners and the car company both recognised. The famous Land Rover Experience made a very clever move when it chose this as its latest location. Not only is Cheshire the heartland of its target customers, but it is also a stunning and unforgettable place in which to learn what these amazing vehicles are capable of. 80 I JUNE/JULY 2013 The Experience offers everything from taster sessions for first-time off-roaders or prospective buyers, to advanced training at the limits of extreme driving. With Land Rover-trained expert instructors and a choice from the entire range, from the versatile Defender to the ultra-luxe Range Rover, the experience can be tailored to every visitor. I went out in the latest Discovery 4, and within minutes was marvelling at how effortlessly it coped with seemingly impassable rocks, mud, river crossings and climbs. As my instructor Charles put it, any Land Rover is better than we are. Meaning, when my human brain thought we were going to topple over or would never make it up a slope, the vehicle knew better. This was really put to the test when we made it to the Quarry, the jewel in Peckforton’s crown. A purposebuilt adventure playground for Land Rovers, hidden in the forest, it boasts obstacles including the seesaw, the elephant’s footprints and the giant Words Oliver Chesher monkey-nut; all designed to demonstrate the accomplishments of 65 years of engineering evolution. The final landmark on the way back to the castle was the unmissable Haunted Bridge. Growing up round here a quarter of a century ago, I’d heard that dogs or horses would refuse to go under this bridge. That’s still true, apparently, but not quite so spooky when you’ve spent all day feeling indestructible.
