MediaGuide2012
February
Spanish-language newspapers in the last year have continued to see many of the struggles that have crippled non-Latino titles large and small across the U.S. Latino
newspapers have continued to see declining ad dollars, posting a 5.9 percent drop in advertising during the first six months of 2011, according to Kantar Media.
Today, newspapers are no longer so in the traditional sense. They are now news organizations that deliver news in a number of ways, with the traditional newspaper
just one venue.
Integration is the operative word for some – offering content across print, digital mobile and digital audio. Others are writing breaking stories for the internet for instant
consumption, then expanding the stories into more analytical pieces to be read in the daily print edition.
A bigger factor for the vitality of Spanish-language papers as a whole is the increasing dispersion of Hispanics across the U.S. into “non-traditional” markets. That has
sparked a need for local advertisers to reach those Latinos and – in turn - created opportunities for publishers in those local markets.
While Latino newspapers’ gains have been soft, most executives agree that the worst is over and the outlook is positive.
