joyed it the most and I will tell you why. that raised their own pigs.
I canned at school The-first year I was in the club . I won
with the rest of the" $37 in prizes on my
girls of the club,
when school was
out. Miss Partridge
was our leader. In
a few days of canning
she organized
a team consisting
of three girls, Lorraine
Bach , the
captain, Leona Jepson
and myself as
associates. She
appointed Miss
Marion to drill us
in canning. We
then began our
work earnestly, can-
. ning once every
ANNA PBOKOPEC week. before the
week of the county
fair when we canned every day of that week.
The canning was done at the homes of
the contestants, always canningthree pints
of our own products; corn, tomatoes and
plums were the most common to can.
Lorraine did the talking while Leona and
I did the work. It was work, too, not play.
The day of the
county fair came
and we were all
prepared for it.
We took our places
on the platform at
7:00 A. M. facing
a large audience.of
onlookers. We
worked together
evenly and accurately.
Everything
seemed to go just
right. The judge
told us we did just
SCOOOAN JONES ANO A PDOF1TABI.E PIO
fine so we went
home delig hted.
Morrilhg dawned bright and cheerful.
The telephone rang while I was still in
bed announcing the good news that we
had won first prize which was ten dolia'ta
and a free trip to the State Fair. How
happy I was. The next Monday we packed
our suit cases and started for the Twin
Cities.
Tuesday we canned at the State Fair
and there everything seemed to go all
right too. We canned two pints of each
product instead of one so that put us off
the track a little but not very much. One
of our cans cracked after we had taken
it out of the process boiler because we
canned opposite a large open door and
the cold air rushed in as we took it out of
the boiling water and cracked it. We
went home Wednesday night.
Saturday Miss Partridge called me up
and said that we won second prize at the
State Fair. We were more than delighted
now. We thought it was great to win at
the county fair but to win at the State
Fair was greater still. The second prize
was twenty-five dollars and a trip to the
Hort iculture meeting at St. Paul in December.
I made twenty-seven dollars in prizes
on my garden and canning work so far this
year. I also received five dozen jars, six
dozen jars rubbers and my two trips. I
have a large patch of cabbage which I intend
to sell soon. My garden contained
five square rods. Everything has not been
estimated so I don't really know how much
I made on my club work. I had a good time.
' My Profits in Pigs
SCOGGAN JONES
HAVE been a member of the Kentucky
1.
Agricultural Association for the last four
years. I liked the pig club work best.
This work has been both instructive
from the standpoint of learning and beneficial
from the standpoint of money to me.
I have been fortunate in being president
of this organization for the last two years.
The first year that I was in the club,
thf bovs raised market hogs.
" market pig. The
second year I won $5 on my pure-bred gilt
and finishingJourth in the breeders. The
third I fed five pigs that I raised myself.
At the Jefferson County Fair I was not
beaten with my pigs. I also won prizes at
the Kentucky State Fair and a Silver Cup.
The picture I am sending is of the prize' iplDS
winning gilt. She showed twice and won
two blue ribbons. I won $55 in money
that year and a silver cup valued at $25.
This year I fed six pigs for the club. I
got first on my best gilt at the Jefferson
County Fair, second on her at the Kentucky
State Fair and I was also fourth in
the promotion club against the breeders.
I beat three large breeders in that class.
The prizes that I won this year amounted
to $37. I now have a herd of forty
hogs so I think this work has been very
instructive and beneficial to me. Don't
you think so? Try it out for yourself.
How I Won My Gold Medal
QRACB EVA NEWMAN
^
IT WAS through my earnest desire to
* have some share in the winning of the
world war, that I became so interested in
war gardens. My
father rented a vacant
lot near our
home in which I
planted and raised
a large variety of
vegetables.
About the middle
of last July, under
a government supervisor,
canning
clubs were organized
and all the
children with war
gardens were invited
to join. I was
chosen secretary of
the Lincoln School Club. We were taught
to can all the products in their season.'
At the end of the season, we had a series
of competitive demonstrations of canning
to select a team of three to represent
Stillwater at the
Minnesota State
Fair.
By this time I
was thoroughly interested
in the work
and the prospect of
a week at the fair
made me more determined
to win a
place on the team
when it was selected.
To my great joy,
I was chosen captain
of the winning
team, the other two
members of which
were Ethel Lagerstaedt
, sixteen GRACB EVA .NKV.MAN
years old , and
Clarence Berggren, aged twelve years old.
So early Monday morning we left for
the fair. Upon our arrival we were given
quarters at the girls' dormitory at the
agricultural farm school. Here we met
girls from every part of the state. My
team was to demonstrate in the afternoon
so we hurried to the fair grounds to prepare.
About four o'clock we were called,
and it was a very nervous little girl who
led her team to the platform and introduced
them to the public. All went well except
for a can of corn breaking in the boiler.
We were entertained the rest of the
week, visiting the large department stores
and the pretty parks about the city.
About two weeks after the fair, I received
word that 1 had won a gold medal
for being the best captain. My team won
eighth place. My winning the medal was
entirely unexpected because I had been
very frightened when I started to demonstrate
and then, I was about the youngest
captain at the fair. 1 am twelve years old.
