MISCHIEVOUS IDLE HANDS
Why Do We Not Fill Those Eager Finger? withjGood Thirigs To Do?
G. W. TUTTLE
IS a fact that there are children who walk away as if it were all finally settled.
IT have no chance to grow up industrious, How a boy will make the dirt fly when
helpful, useful. They have been pet- we have confidence in him; when we say,
ted, pampered, candied, waited upon "Yes, that is a hard job, Johnnie, but you
from infancy. They are not taught to can do it if anybody can." Confidence
work ; no little tasks are set for childish does wonders f or a boy. Too many par-
hands;„no incentives to industry are held ents groan that "Johnnie is going to
before little eyes; no simple errands wait the dogs." Well, why should he not go
for children's feet.
to the dogs? Is not that what they are
It by no means follows that the parents expecting? Has he any encouragement to
of such children are well-to-do. Often they choose any other goal? Possibly if they
are people who-toil hard from morning un- had a little confidence in that boy and they
til night—good, mistaken people who do could get it across to the boy—and there New way. Any instalment you like now made easy.
Rjfi
not fear hardships for themselves but who are unseen angels always waiting to carry
A chance to work and a chance to play for-nothings and make good in life.
should be the lot of every child. Light A boy .will always find something to do.
tasks even for the smaller children are only If we set no tasks for him, Satan will have
right. Fortunate the children who earht cigarettes to be smoked, melon patches to
acquire the habit of industry. Don't say, be raided and naughty stories to be heard
"If Susie helps she will be sure to break and told. /
some of the dishes." Which is of the most Even on farms, boys and girls are found
Give the children responsible tasks as work—girls who grow up inefficient be-
they grow older and do not stand ovecthem cause their mothers do not want them
Expect them to succeed, not fail. Do not
say, "I am afraid you cannot do that!"
three-year-old would be better and happier
if he had his wee errands to run that
Poisoning from a snake bile should be
then sucked so that the poisonouo substance
is drawn out. Stimulants should
