It is a healthful and profitable occupation for any girl or woman whose time is not almost any price. In the second place, the demands of the Government for wool have left very little of that commodity for civilian uses, resulting in enormously high prices; and civilians are finding it practicable this winter to pay the extra premium for furs. In the third place, the earning power of the masses in this country is unusually high at the present time, and a great many people are gratifying a longing for furs that never could be gratified before. It is, then, a combination of enormous demand and expected shortage that has raised the price of raw furs to unheard-of figures this fall. As this is written, the signing of the armistice injects an element of uncertainty into the future fur situation; but, unless manufacturers refuse to follow the present trend of values, there does not seem to be any reasonable possibility of a material drop in prices during the forthcoming winter. The American and Allied armies will not demobilize with the cessation of hostilities. The trappers will not return for some time to come, wool will remain scarce and high in price, and American prosperity should continue. Nothing seems more certain than that those who fully occupied at home, and to the boy it is the supreme happiness of life. In every farm family there must be one person— father, son, mother or daughter—who can tend a fewtraps this winter and take advantage of a situation which may never come again. The staple furs in this country are the skunk, muskrat, mink, weasel, raccoon, opossum, foxar)(l wolf. Then therearethe civet cat and badger which enter largely into the trade this year. All of these animals are distributed over large sections of the country, many of them over the entire country. With the exception of the wolf, none of them requires very large traps or great physical strength in trapping. They are the commonest of our fur-bearing animals, the smallest, and, with a few very rare exceptions, the most valuable. That is what makes their taking so attractive to the amateur. The prices which have been paid for some of these furs this fall are undoubtedly tempting.
