OUR CO-OPERATIVE FARM COLONY We Think We Have Perfectly Solved the Problem of Cc>mmunity Living LIVE in the Llano Cooperative Colony in the highlands of Louisiana, where 1 the lumbermen have cut off the timber and hundreds of thousands of acres are idle and non-productive. ' I belong *^) the Colony organization. Our plan is\ complete cooperation in every way, with equal participation in profits. We collectively own the land, the implements, the livestock, and the industries. We farm cooperatively, too. - Similar enterprises have been tried at various times; not many have been successful, usually because o{ legal difficulties, mismanagement, or poor judgment in selection of location or industrial activities in which to engage. We first made a study of all other co-operative colonies of which we could get any information. Then we incorporated to secure the fullest protection of the law. We employ ourselves, so that all of us stand in the unique position of being employers and employees at the same time. We have selected our location with care and are making good progress in farming. We are using the usual corporation form of management so that we expect to avoid that worst of all errors—mismanagement. •But what I want to tell is how we are taking our part of the burden of war conditions and shortages. We came here a year ago, an! we are not wealthy. We cannot afford to buy many bonds, so we must do something else. And our "something else" is the economy of time and effort through our form of organization. We could not produce much this year, any more than any other farmer the first year that he reclaims land from the wilderness but we will be able to do a great deal next year. Ours is a sweet potato and peanut country. We can grow tremendous quantities of them. So we are going to devote most of our energies to this. Because we do not have to run many fences except outside fences, because we do not have to own and keep so many teams'1 and animals and implements, and because we are able to shift bur labor, from place to place, we are able to economize greatly. We are living on the least possible amount, because we must and also "because the more we can put into machinery and essentials for tilling the soil, the greater will be »ur production. We plot our land to farm it to the crops we wish to grow. Our foreman, with the foremen working with him, put in the different crops. If there are implements required, they are shifted from place to place,"and there is no unnecessary duplication. We will install machinery of various kinds, all of which will be owned by the entire community. that picture would live on the walls of Luther's memory: A big bare room; dust and cobwebs and sunshine; the Jedge and Angelina. The judic ial eyes behind the gold-bowed spectacles were twinkling with enjoyment. The scrap was on. Luther'heard the station master chuckling at his side. "You always were a little timid , William. I can well remember how MRS. ERNEST S. WOOSTER TT IS not possible for all or many ¦*¦ communities to be turned into colonies, nor would such a move be wise if possible. All communities, however, f ind it beneficial to communize some of their activities and for _ this reason, Mrs. Wooster's enthusiastic recital is broadly suggestive. We have our own store, shoe shop, carpenter and cabinet shop, physician, hotel, laundry, machine and blacksmith shop, dairy, poultry farm, hogs. We own them all together. In this way we are able to adopt to a degree in our farm operations, the system of specialization that has made the Henry Ford shops so efficient. The men who are carpenters or the best builders, are kept at this work as much as possible, so that the best farmers can stay with the farm crops. It is alizarin work of course, and if the carpenters did not build the sweet potato drier, for example, it -would mean that fiie farmers would have to quit and do this work. There is more result obtained if those best fitted for this work are kept at it. We have our own cane mill to make sirup, and are producing a large proportion of what we use. The women make clothes, the colony buying the cloth for the shirts, overalls, and so forth. Most of us women wear overalls at our work. We encourage the women to eat at the community hotel and thus escape household drudgery as much as possible. All over the country, last spring, there was talk of back-yard gardens. Well, we wanted the women and children to do garden work. So we made the garden a part of our colony school. We have a man who is a marvel in handling children. He can take an incorrigible boy and make him into a good worker. He takes the children into our co-operative garden and this , year they produced about $1,000 worth of vegetables. Of course we used most of them ourselves, but the fact that the children did most of this work shows how we are making our "war gardens" a reality. Our community life is delightful. We are all just farmers. Many of our people are well educated and talented. We do not believe in making entertainment a commercialized feature, so all entertainment and education are free. We have classes in language, music, philosophy, astronomy and other subjects, the number being constantly added to. No charges are made, and we have typists, musicians and others who have learned their professions or developed their talents in the colony. Our dances are free, and we are now building a theater in which our dramatic club will give entertainments. The retort shot out involuntaril y as though the Jedge were not a Jedge but a mere man or—boy. But instantly the mantle of his dignified office fell about him again like a shrouding garment. A flush tinged his grizzled cheeks. "The prisoner will please confine her remarks to the matter in hand. Tell the court , please, what the speedometer registered when-—" "Yes, you were rather a good little scout," conceded Grandmums reminiscently. She was enjoying herself beyond the speed limit. "You made a nice soft little buffer, William! You always did manage to get me out of scrapes." "If you think I'm going to get you out of this one—" There he went again! Angelina Moody was putting the dickens into him and taking the dignity out. Wrath seized upon the Jedge. "Order!" he pounded sternly. "The dignity of the court " "Mercy, I don't ex^ggt anything! Go* ahead and fine me a nice fat fine, why don't you, and then come outside and I'll give you the spin of your life. For-ty-two miles, William!" purred Grandmums. already have a moving picture machine, and we will, as a community, rent films and give entertainments occasionally. There is a big saving in all of these things. We live on an allowance that is unbelieveably small but we are building for the future, and we know that if we are not bothered or handicapped by unforeseen circumstances that we will be well fixed in a few years. Our co-operation and the elimination of profit and non-essential things and useless duplication of labor, and careless waste of materials and effort will all help us in becoming prosperous. We have made farming pleasant because we live in a community together. We enjoy a social life that is not equalled anywhere that I have ever been. We believe that our community system of farming is one that should commend itself to the Federal government in its search for a means of establishing returned soldiers on the soil. It is the barrenness of farm life in so many places and the dearth of social life that so frequently turns the farmer from the farm to the city. We are overcoming that in a natural and sane manner that is already a success. I believe, too, that our plan is a good one to use in settling up the cut-over lands of the South and of the North. The co-operative method of farming which we are using, and which we call the Llano plan, together with the collective ownership of land and the implements and other means of farming, will attract people to the land. We believe we are demonstrating, too, that more results can be obtained by our method with less effort. Women are not household drudges here. We have tried to relieve them from this, to teach them to enjoy life. We are succeeding. I wish other women could see what we are doing. I think we are setting an example in wartime economy that is worth while. We have not the capital to buy bonds, but we are economizing to the fullest extent. We permit absolutely no loafing, and we have enforced the "work or fight" order ourselves without waiting for the government to. do so. We insist that every able-bodied person work, and we have men up to seventy doing full day's work, with children as young as seven gladly working in the co-operative garden. We believe there is no other community in the land that can make the showing that is made by our community here at Stables, Vernon Parish, Louisiana, and we believe that our patriotism is equal to that of any patriot in the land. I am sure that the work we are doing is worthy of the highest praise. And should it not serve as an illustration of what can be done' when people agree to agree for the good of all and the happiness of all? Listeners broke into joyous applause. The bare cobwebby place rocked with joy. Grandmums' beaming face regarded the face (beaming, too, but under such cover of decency as was possible) of Judge Stickney: But the judicial voice was tremulously stern although behind thegold-bowed spectacles much was going on.
