In those days there were but few large poultry farms, and thegovernment.whether state or national, paid no attention to poultry and made no attempt to assist in solving the poultry-keepers' problems. Things are considerably different now. The poultry-keeper who does not have standard-bred fowls is justly regarded as behind the times, and the government, both national and state, gives considerable attention to poultry-keeping problems and unreservedly recommends strong, vigorous, standard-bred fowls in place of mongrels. The old idea that exhibition fowls were weak and unfit for practical purposes finds but few adherents these days. than to studyingt:the intricate problems of balancing a ration so that it will provide j ust so much-fats, proteins, etc. Water must ¦ always be furnished, and must be free from ice and clean. The fact that milk is given the fowls to drink does not by any means make water unnecessary. Both'the hen's body and .the eggs which she lays are composed -very largely of water, and unless sufficient water is furnished the best results cannot be obtained. Caring for-the stock in winter quarters ¦ is usually, very' simple. The different rations'are fed twice or three times per day, preferably at certain hours. Nothing is allowed to frighten the fowls, for fright hurts egg production. The house is kept fairly warm but well ventilated, the roostplatforms cleaned frequently, and the bedding on the floor kept dry. These are the main points in successful feeding and care of fowls in'winter, and there is nothing about this work that anyone cannot do successfully. • • 'V Poultry -Yard Briefs IF YOlf have standarcUbred fowls; exhibit some of them at the nearest poultry show. If you' cannot exhibit this year, be sure to visit a poultry show, for at such an exhibition much can be learned regarding the correct shape and color required for the different varieties. Fowls which are confined to the poultry house during severe weather must have plenty of green food of some kind or they will not keep in the best of health and will not prove profitable. Grit , shells and charcoal should always be within , reach of the fowls during the winter. All surplus market geese and turkeys should be gotten rid of as soon as the market has recovered from the effect of the holiday trade. I'sually more eggs per lien are secured from small flocks than from larger ones but when a large number of fowls are kept, the added labor of caring for them when divided into small flocks sometimes offsets the additional income. Warm poultry houses which are well ventilated are necessary in cold parts of the country, because fowls which use most of their feed to generate heat cannot lay as well as thev otherwise would. HOW I MADE MY POULTRY PAY ROSA YATES THE first of January, 1917, I bought 24 young Plymouth Rock pullets, gave tliem good care and fed them for eggs. In three weeks they were laying finely. I then bought two incubators. I set my liens' eggs and added some others to fill up the incubators. I set four liens at the same time. .My firs t hatch came off the middle of February. I hatched 266 fine chicks from 389 eggs. I divided the clucks among the four hens and a good brooder. 1 kept part of the chicks in the brooder at night until they were six or seven days old , then gave them to the hens. For tlicir first feed I gave them finel y crumbled egg shells and prepared chick feed , plenty of fresh water and fine grit. After they were two weeks old I kept tliem in a small building with clean litter for them to tt ork in. I gave them plenty of milk. I raised 460 good chicks from .la.i eggs. At three months old I sold all but 87 pullets which I kept for winter layers. 1 received $186.60 for the hens and young chicks, the hens bringing S16.S0, which , after I deducted S58 for the feed , eggs and oil for the incubators, left SI 11.80 for my work (or four months, and my 87 . pullets. Then I began to feed for winter laying. The first ol September I gave them a noon mash of beef scrap, chopped bones and bran. After we butchered our hogs, 1 fed a mash of turnips, potato peelings, table scraps and meat cracklings , with a tablespootiful of sulphur once a week. My pullets bega n to lay December first. I sold eggs as follows: December S18.60; January S28. G.*; February S.i5.75; March $40.45;.A pril S..8.94: SI ()2J1 in five months. 1 sold the 87 liens for S7.?.°5 so the total for hens and eggs was S2.ih.32. The cost of feed for the hens being Sfto , 1 had to mv credit SI 73.32 for the hens and eggs. Si 11.80 (or the young chicks, making the total for all $285.U in sixteen months.
