UMPIRE MENTORING
Part of retaining and fostering umpires is to develop a Mentoring “family” type culture.
Umpires who wish to maintain and improve their skills and abilities should be actively
seeking mentoring, this displaying willingness and motivation to improve.
Each umpire should seek to develop two (2) umpires at a lower level of skill AND find a
mentor of the level above. Even a NEW Umpire can mentor or partner in mentoring a
colleague of similar ability.
Being a mentor is not hard and it is about shared learning, sharing coping skills,
collaboratively correcting and seeking higher advice when needed.
Clubs will need to help facilitate this mentoring relationship by teaming up umpires.
The Umpiring Committee and other higher badged umpires are always on the lookout for
talent, and gifted umpires will be Talent Identified and invited to enter a separate
Mentoring Programme, as well, at the level appropriate to their talent.
This is still a work in progress but with your help it WILL work.
