Eastwood Ryde Umpiring Convenor Manual “to be used in conjunction with the Netball Australia NUDF” EXAMPLE: Preventing Burnout Club A have only one National C Badge Umpire in their club. They have three teams. Club B also have only one National C Badge Umpire in their club and they also have three teams. Club A roster their National C Badge onto every game because 1. She is the best they have 2. She is all they have. Club B asks each team to provide one novice umpire to do some umpiring. They roster their National C Badge to umpire one game and to mentor the other novice umpires on the other games. Club A’s National C badge umpire gets tired each week. By the third game she is making bad decisions due to lack of concentration. She feels bad in herself; she gets abused from the court. Each week she feels worse and eventually gets sick of umpiring altogether. She quits umpiring and leaves Club A. Club B’s National C badge is able to fully concentrate on her one game each week. She makes good decisions and gets praise from the court and feels good in herself. Each week she feels she is improving. Her mentoring charges also improve every week and she learns new tricks for her own umpiring. At the end of the season, Club A has no umpires. At the end of the season, Club B has four umpires. Using more qualified umpires to mentor novices is the best way to achieve an Umpiring depth in your club, even if mentoring is only for half or quarter of a game each week. Eastwood Ryde Umpiring Convenor Manual “to be used in conjunction with the Netball Australia NUDF” UMPIRE MENTORING Part of retaining and fostering umpires is to develop a Mentoring “family” type culture. Umpires who wish to maintain and improve their skills and abilities should be actively seeking mentoring, this displaying willingness and motivation to improve. Each umpire should seek to develop two (2) umpires at a lower level of skill AND find a mentor of the level above. Even a NEW Umpire can mentor or partner in mentoring a colleague of similar ability. Being a mentor is not hard and it is about shared learning, sharing coping skills, collaboratively correcting and seeking higher advice when needed. Clubs will need to help facilitate this mentoring relationship by teaming up umpires. The Umpiring Committee and other higher badged umpires are always on the lookout for talent, and gifted umpires will be Talent Identified and invited to enter a separate Mentoring Programme, as well, at the level appropriate to their talent. This is still a work in progress but with your help it WILL work.
