Jurma<strong>in</strong> (1999) po<strong>in</strong>ts out that “<strong>in</strong> addition to type <strong>of</strong><br />
activity, duration, amplitude, and sense (torsion vs.<br />
compression) are all significant. They vary <strong>in</strong>dependently and<br />
produce variable effects.” Traumatic <strong>in</strong>jury and <strong>in</strong>fection can<br />
accelerate <strong>the</strong> onset and expression <strong>of</strong> DJD. Diseases such as<br />
periostitis and osteomyelitis are two examples. Periostitis is<br />
<strong>in</strong>flammation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> membrane cover<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> bone (periosteum) and<br />
is usually caused by <strong>in</strong>fection or trauma to <strong>the</strong> sk<strong>in</strong>.<br />
Osteomyelitis is <strong>in</strong>flammation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> bone and bone marrow<br />
(Aufderheide and Rodriguez-Mart<strong>in</strong>, 1998).<br />
Despite <strong>the</strong> fact that <strong>degenerative</strong> <strong>jo<strong>in</strong>t</strong> <strong>disease</strong> is a<br />
common pathological condition, no simple etiological explanation<br />
exists. Distribution and pattern<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> DJD <strong>in</strong> skeletal rema<strong>in</strong>s<br />
thus takes on a multi-factorial model (Jurma<strong>in</strong>, 1977). Future<br />
studies on DJD might look at isolat<strong>in</strong>g specific activities and<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir possible <strong>in</strong>fluence on DJD, perhaps <strong>in</strong> a more modern<br />
cl<strong>in</strong>ical sett<strong>in</strong>g, suggested by <strong>the</strong> literature on sports medic<strong>in</strong>e<br />
and athletes.<br />
One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> greatest challenges <strong>in</strong> research on DJD, both on<br />
an <strong>in</strong>dividual research level as well as <strong>the</strong> collaborative effort<br />
among scholars everywhere, is <strong>the</strong> problem <strong>of</strong> standardization.<br />
Buikstra and Ubelaker (1994) have recently published certa<strong>in</strong><br />
criteria suggested for standard data collection and<br />
measurements, but not all researchers follow <strong>the</strong>se guidel<strong>in</strong>es.<br />
