pitt<strong>in</strong>g can be difficult to assess <strong>in</strong> skeletal rema<strong>in</strong>s.<br />
Porosity may develop due to th<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> articular plate and<br />
vascular <strong>in</strong>vasion <strong>of</strong> calcified cartilage, and may not be related<br />
at all to DJD (Jurma<strong>in</strong>, 1999).<br />
A Nikon stereoscopic microscope was used to identify<br />
premortem from postmortem pitt<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> <strong>jo<strong>in</strong>t</strong> surfaces.<br />
Premortem pitt<strong>in</strong>g was identified as such by <strong>the</strong> rounded and<br />
smooth edged appearance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pits, obviously not due to<br />
postmortem handl<strong>in</strong>g or dis<strong>in</strong>tegration. Lipp<strong>in</strong>g and eburnation<br />
were identified by <strong>the</strong> naked eye, with extent <strong>of</strong> eburnation<br />
be<strong>in</strong>g confirmed by use <strong>of</strong> a microscope. In addition to <strong>the</strong><br />
identification <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se three characteristics, I looked for<br />
large centralized pits with additional bone buildup <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
center <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>jo<strong>in</strong>t</strong> capsule.<br />
Prevalence as well as <strong>the</strong> pattern<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> lesions was<br />
observed. Colored dots were placed on <strong>the</strong> radii to mark <strong>the</strong><br />
location <strong>of</strong> pitt<strong>in</strong>g, lipp<strong>in</strong>g, and eburnation on each <strong>jo<strong>in</strong>t</strong><br />
surface. The data were entered <strong>in</strong>to Micros<strong>of</strong>t Excel 2000<br />
spreadsheet and SPSS 10.0 for W<strong>in</strong>dows. SPSS was used for<br />
statistical <strong>analysis</strong>. Two-way frequency tables were created to<br />
compare presence and degree <strong>of</strong> severity <strong>of</strong> observations by <strong>jo<strong>in</strong>t</strong><br />
surface, side, and <strong>in</strong> relation to o<strong>the</strong>r DJD observations. Chi-<br />
