Degenerative Jo<strong>in</strong>t Disease Among Late Woodland Ossuary<br />

Populations<br />

Numerous studies have been conducted <strong>in</strong> both cl<strong>in</strong>ical as<br />

well as anthropological and archaeological contexts to better<br />

understand <strong>degenerative</strong> <strong>jo<strong>in</strong>t</strong> <strong>disease</strong> (DJD) and its etiology, as<br />

well as ga<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong>formation about <strong>the</strong> activities and life ways <strong>of</strong><br />

past populations. Although its exact etiology is elusive, DJD<br />

is considered to be one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> most common <strong>disease</strong>s affect<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>jo<strong>in</strong>t</strong>s and <strong>jo<strong>in</strong>t</strong> surfaces, occurr<strong>in</strong>g not specifically due to old<br />

age as <strong>the</strong> term <strong>degenerative</strong> may <strong>in</strong>dicate (Anderson, 1964;<br />

Aufderheide and Rodriguez-Mart<strong>in</strong>, 1998; Jurma<strong>in</strong>, 1999). Wells<br />

(1964) suggests that such factors as cumulative stra<strong>in</strong> over many<br />

years and repeated episodes <strong>of</strong> m<strong>in</strong>or stress are important<br />

factors <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> onset <strong>of</strong> DJD. In addition, specific activities<br />

associated with <strong>the</strong> every day life <strong>of</strong> a group <strong>of</strong> people can aid<br />

<strong>in</strong> determ<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g what <strong>jo<strong>in</strong>t</strong>s will be affected or where one would<br />

expect to f<strong>in</strong>d <strong>in</strong>itial and advanced stages <strong>of</strong> <strong>degenerative</strong><br />

changes.<br />

Harris (1949) presented evidence <strong>of</strong> <strong>disease</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> rema<strong>in</strong>s<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ossuary <strong>of</strong> Cahiague as be<strong>in</strong>g representative <strong>of</strong> Huron<br />

Indians <strong>of</strong> this time period. DJD, or osteoarthritis as referred<br />

to by Harris, was observed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> sp<strong>in</strong>e with o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>jo<strong>in</strong>t</strong>s be<strong>in</strong>g<br />
