Often, a researcher will choose to focus only on moderate and<br />
severe expressions <strong>of</strong> DJD <strong>in</strong> order to def<strong>in</strong>itively label <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>disease</strong> as such. Based on <strong>the</strong> medical <strong>in</strong>formation that pitt<strong>in</strong>g<br />
can occur due to a number <strong>of</strong> factors not related to DJD<br />
(Sokol<strong>of</strong>f, 1969), it may be appropriate <strong>in</strong> this study to label<br />
DJD as such accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> presence <strong>of</strong> ei<strong>the</strong>r one or more<br />
characteristics <strong>of</strong> DJD, or based on <strong>the</strong> moderate and severe<br />
categories only.<br />
Anderson (1964) concluded that <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fairty sample, <strong>the</strong>re<br />
was a high <strong>in</strong>cidence <strong>of</strong> DJD <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> shoulder, hip, and clavicle,<br />
with a lower <strong>in</strong>cidence <strong>of</strong> DJD <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> elbow, wrist, and ankle.<br />
Variation was noted <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>cidence <strong>of</strong> DJD at different <strong>jo<strong>in</strong>t</strong>s,<br />
and <strong>the</strong> different <strong>in</strong>cidence <strong>in</strong> two bones <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> same<br />
<strong>jo<strong>in</strong>t</strong> articulation (<strong>radius</strong> and ulna). There was a m<strong>in</strong>imal<br />
degree <strong>of</strong> difference, but still a difference <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>cidence<br />
between <strong>the</strong> right and left sides <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fairty sample, which<br />
differs from <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Poole-Rose ossuary. Anderson<br />
also found that <strong>degenerative</strong> changes can beg<strong>in</strong> as early as young<br />
adults, depend<strong>in</strong>g on several factors, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g genetic<br />
predisposition, health, repeated trauma or <strong>in</strong>jury, and type <strong>of</strong><br />
activities that made up daily life.<br />
Werner et al. (1991) have analyzed <strong>the</strong> basic mechanics <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> wrist <strong>jo<strong>in</strong>t</strong> and found that 63-87% <strong>of</strong> wrist force passes<br />
through <strong>the</strong> distal <strong>radius</strong>. The transmission <strong>of</strong> force through<br />
