<strong>of</strong> DJD, a functional or stress related hypo<strong>the</strong>sis was suggested<br />
for <strong>the</strong> more severe changes. In general, <strong>the</strong> overall conclusion<br />
<strong>of</strong> Ortner’s research on <strong>the</strong> humerus co<strong>in</strong>cides well with <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>radius</strong> <strong>in</strong> this study. Eburnation rarely occurred without<br />
porosity, while porosity frequently occurred without eburnation.<br />
This suggestion supports <strong>the</strong> research hypo<strong>the</strong>sis that porosity<br />
<strong>of</strong>ten precedes lipp<strong>in</strong>g and may be due to o<strong>the</strong>r factors besides<br />
DJD, for example <strong>in</strong>creased vascularization to <strong>the</strong> subchondral<br />
bone.<br />
A significant part <strong>of</strong> this research that helped to answer<br />
questions on DJD was <strong>the</strong> application <strong>of</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r studies both<br />
with<strong>in</strong> this collection and outside <strong>of</strong> it, <strong>in</strong> order to ga<strong>in</strong> a<br />
better understand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> DJD. Lund<strong>in</strong>’s (2000) and Ortner’s<br />
(1966) study <strong>of</strong> DJD <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> humerus were analyzed to see if a<br />
comparison could be made between what type <strong>of</strong> degeneration was<br />
occurr<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> distal humerus compared with <strong>the</strong> proximal<br />
<strong>radius</strong>. Although <strong>the</strong> results were similar to those that were<br />
expected, <strong>the</strong>y confirmed <strong>the</strong> presence <strong>of</strong> DJD, and <strong>the</strong> fact that<br />
both systemic as well as functional stress factors contributed<br />
to DJD. As a result, subsistence activities and <strong>the</strong> lifestyle<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> people <strong>of</strong> this time period and geographic area play an<br />
important role <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> expression <strong>of</strong> DJD.<br />
