CHAPTER 4<br />

CONCLUSIONS<br />

The ma<strong>in</strong> objective <strong>of</strong> this study was to exam<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong><br />

expression and pattern<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>degenerative</strong> <strong>jo<strong>in</strong>t</strong> <strong>disease</strong>.<br />

Several hypo<strong>the</strong>ses were tested concern<strong>in</strong>g factors affect<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

onset <strong>of</strong> DJD. Ideas were presented to suggest why certa<strong>in</strong><br />

patterns were found and what <strong>the</strong>y might <strong>in</strong>dicate about <strong>the</strong><br />

activities <strong>in</strong> which <strong>the</strong>se peoples were engag<strong>in</strong>g on a daily<br />

basis. The <strong>analysis</strong> <strong>of</strong> humerii with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Poole-Rose ossuary<br />

complements <strong>the</strong> results <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> radii. O<strong>the</strong>r studies <strong>of</strong> DJD were<br />

utilized as a comparative method for evaluat<strong>in</strong>g DJD.<br />

Research by o<strong>the</strong>rs puts more emphasis on <strong>the</strong> stress or<br />

functional hypo<strong>the</strong>sis <strong>of</strong> DJD affect<strong>in</strong>g <strong>jo<strong>in</strong>t</strong>s, although systemic<br />

factors such as age and nutrition play a significant role <strong>in</strong><br />

DJD, especially <strong>in</strong> its <strong>in</strong>itial changes and onset. A comb<strong>in</strong>ation<br />

<strong>of</strong> systemic and mechanical factors is <strong>the</strong> best explanation for<br />

<strong>occurrence</strong> <strong>of</strong> DJD <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> radii <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Poole-Rose ossuary.<br />

Previous research on <strong>the</strong> <strong>radius</strong> and elbow <strong>jo<strong>in</strong>t</strong> suggest some<br />

form <strong>of</strong> trauma or stress as responsible for <strong>the</strong> <strong>occurrence</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

DJD <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> elbow. Overall frequencies and patterns <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

current study parallel o<strong>the</strong>r research where <strong>the</strong> elbow is usually<br />

moderately affected.<br />
