Madeleine remained alone in her prison,<br />

torn by <strong>the</strong> most agonizing fears. Her<br />

sister, who had comforted <strong>an</strong>d consoled<br />

her, <strong>an</strong>d whose presence had made even<br />

that gloomy dungeon tolerable, had been<br />

taken from her, <strong>an</strong>d she felt that she should<br />

see her no more. In her distress, to whom<br />

could she turn, save to Him who is a pre-<br />

sent help in time <strong>of</strong> trouble ? She bent <strong>the</strong><br />

knee <strong>an</strong>d bowed <strong>the</strong> head in that damp cell,<br />

as she poured out her soul to that glorious<br />

Mediator who sits at <strong>the</strong> right h<strong>an</strong>d <strong>of</strong> God.<br />

After some hours, De la Mena came<br />

into <strong>the</strong> dungeon with a l<strong>an</strong>tern.
