THE GAEDEN OF THE CONVENT.<br />

Echaed <strong>an</strong>d Ardoine felt refreshed by <strong>the</strong><br />

cold night air as <strong>the</strong>y stood in <strong>the</strong> garden,<br />

<strong>an</strong>d looked upon <strong>the</strong> w<strong>an</strong>ing moon <strong>an</strong>d <strong>the</strong><br />

star-lit c<strong>an</strong>opy <strong>of</strong> heaven, once more after<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir imprisonment. But <strong>the</strong>y heard voices<br />

in <strong>the</strong> dist<strong>an</strong>ce <strong>an</strong>d immediately concealed<br />

<strong>the</strong>mselves behind <strong>the</strong> shrubs, endeavouring<br />

at <strong>the</strong> same time to approach <strong>the</strong> postern<br />

which had been agreed upon. A vio-<br />

lent altercation was taking place, <strong>an</strong>d<br />

<strong>the</strong> voices <strong>of</strong> <strong>an</strong>gry combat<strong>an</strong>ts were dis-<br />

tinctly heard. A party, consisting <strong>of</strong> two<br />

or three soldiers, a m<strong>an</strong> <strong>an</strong>d a wom<strong>an</strong>,<br />

passed by <strong>the</strong>m in heated discussion, <strong>an</strong>d
