The number of the victims of the Inquisition who
perished in Spain from 1481, under Torquemada, to
1665, under Philip IV., was—burnt alive, 33,412;
burnt in eSigy, 15,743 ; condemned to the galleys or
to prison, 272,514.

CHAPTER XII.
For the history and chronology of these days (to
which I have adhered closely), see Muston, vol. i.,
partii., chap. vii. Nearly all the incidental allusions
are historical, and many of the speeches in the actors
mouths are their veritable words. With the excep-
tion of chapters xxvii. and xxviii. (which are histo-
rical), the last half of this volume is concerned with
the dramatic unity and development of the plot, and
cannot, therefore, be substantiated by references.
