bequests to posterity from <strong>the</strong> Inquisition,<br />

This chapter is founded on a real incident, <strong>an</strong>d took<br />

place in 1560, in <strong>the</strong> town <strong>of</strong> Carign<strong>an</strong>. <strong>The</strong> m<strong>an</strong><br />

was a French fugitive, named Mathurin, <strong>an</strong>d his<br />

wife, Jo<strong>an</strong>, a Yaudois.— See Israel <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Alps, vol. i.,<br />

chap, viii., page 123. <strong>The</strong> conversation introduced<br />

into <strong>the</strong> text is quoted almost verbatim as it took<br />

place.<br />

CHAPTER VII.<br />

<strong>The</strong> two pastors, Aquit <strong>an</strong>d Gros, apostatized through<br />

fear <strong>of</strong> death, <strong>an</strong>d <strong>the</strong>ir subsequent repent<strong>an</strong>ce <strong>an</strong>d<br />

abjuration <strong>of</strong> Rom<strong>an</strong>ism (see Leger, part ii., page 65),<br />

forms a most affecting document. It was publicly<br />

read by <strong>the</strong>m before <strong>the</strong> Churches whose ministers<br />

<strong>the</strong>y had been once. Page 70. This certificate was<br />

sent to <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Cambridge by Sir Samuel<br />

Morl<strong>an</strong>d, as also <strong>the</strong> parchment alluded to in chap,<br />
