THE DUNGEON.
Once more had the grating key of the dun-
geon turned upon Echard. His prospects
were indeed gloomy, for his faint lingering
hopes were extinguished, and an ignomi-
nious death seemed his inevitable fate. The
suspicions the authorities had entertained
of his heresy had deepened into the awful
accusation. He had made the Marquis a
mortal enemy by that personal encounter
