THE MARRIAGE.<br />

<strong>The</strong> convent bell had tolled <strong>the</strong> hour <strong>of</strong><br />

midnight, <strong>an</strong>d <strong>an</strong>nounced <strong>the</strong> commence-<br />

ment <strong>of</strong> Saturday, <strong>the</strong> 24th April, a day<br />

which must leave <strong>an</strong> eternal blot upon <strong>the</strong><br />

Church <strong>of</strong> Rome. "Would that it were a<br />

solitary date in her <strong>an</strong>nals <strong>of</strong> persecution<br />

C<strong>an</strong>dles were burning on <strong>the</strong> high altar in<br />

<strong>the</strong> chapel <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> convent some time after<br />

nocturnes, as if for some special purpose.<br />

<strong>The</strong>ir light shone on <strong>the</strong> carved oak stalls<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> choir, <strong>the</strong> h<strong>an</strong>diwork <strong>of</strong> one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

monks, who had spent thirty- <strong>six</strong> years in<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir completion. <strong>The</strong> place was o<strong>the</strong>rwise<br />

dark <strong>an</strong>d silent.<br />
