The ROM/RAM expansion card allows
both ROM and RAM to be installed in
all models of the Archimedes range. It
provides the necessary interface
software, in an on-board ROM, for all
normal filing system operations.
Each expansion card has eight
sockets, one of which contains the
interface software, leaving seven
available. Every socket will accept
either a ROM or a RAM chip. A total
of up to 896 Kbytes of any mixture of
RAM or ROM may be fitted. Multiple
cards may be fitted to provide an even
bigger linear capacity.
LANGUAGES AND UTILITIES
The RFS is the RAM/ROM filing
system. This provides all of the usual
filing system facilities.
Any combination of RAM chips
will appear to the RFS as a single linear
block of file space (note: it does not
extend the normal RAM area of the
machine itself). BASIC programs can
be saved in the usual manner, any file
can be copied into the RAM filing
system with 'COPY, files can be
deleted, lock/unlocked, catalogued,
executed, etc.
Archimedes 305 and 310 models
require the installation of an additional
'backplane' before any interface
expansion cards may be fitted.

The password management system
allows the system user to keep track of
all users registered on the file-server
(Acorn Level II, III and Filestore
Econet Systems).
On level II systems the following
details may be displayed:
A Boot option for all users or system
users only, with or without passwords,
users in original or alphabetic order;
data to be printed to screen, printer or
file.
Filed data may be used to facilitate
changing user parameters using the
software supplied or that written by the
user.
On level III and Filestore systems all
the above are possible as is free space
allocation of the user. Groups of users
may be searched for.
The major advantage of the package
is that the status of the entire user
population may be viewed at a glance.
It is possible to check regularly for users
who have illegal options, or who may
have illegal system status.
Software is included to illustrate a
range of applications for the data
gathered (e.g. setting up options for
entire groups of users).

enable you to encrypt any file of any
size held on disc. It is menu driven
using a mouse. It works independently
of any application but can connect
with some applications, such as BASIC
and TWIN.

This package provides direct, mousedriven
access to the Arthur operating
system, to resident and disc-based
programs and to directory and file
handling routines, in one consistent
working environment. Window titles
are given as full path names.
Loaded as an extension to the
ROM-based Desktop supplied with the
Archimedes, the Enhancer allows the
user to display directory maps; make,
set and delete directories; find,
timestamp, access, print and change
type for any file. Disc handling
facilities include name/rename, format,
copy, display free space, compact and
backup hard disc to floppies.
The Mitre Desktop Enhancer allows
you to run BASIC and execute EXEC
files ( commands), clear screen before
running programs, 'pause' to read
screen messages before returning to
Desktop after running programs, save/
restore Desktop and colour palette and
set mouse speed. Programmers will find
the Mitre 'Make desktop' utility
particularly useful. The Enhancer will
also automatically load any utilities or
accessories you may have written, and
the Set-up facility allows you to edit,
save and load machine configurations.

The utilities included on the discs were
produced during the development of a
major software project on the Acorn
Archimedes computer. Some were
adapted from various sources, some
were specially written to support the
project, and some were provided to
make good deficiencies in existing
software support for the Archimedes
range.
MicroEMACS was chosen as the
editor since it is in common use across
a wide range of machines and has
become somewhat of an industry
standard. MicroEMACS, like most
worthwhile pieces of software, can take
some time to master. This
implementation is a complete version,
including MAGIC and CRYPT modes.
It works in either of two screen
resolutions, which may be switched
mid-edit. It does not support colour
screens or the mouse as yet.
KERMIT was chosen as the
communications program as it must be
present on a greater variety of
machines than any other package.
Both EMACS and KERMIT are
interactive, so they can be called from
the desktop and then 'driven' from
their internal menus.
