CIC A-Level General Physics
Pack
Longman Group UK Ltd
£34. 95
Individual price: £18. 50
This pack includes: Acoustics; Mass
Spectrometer and Photoelectric Effect.
Acoustics was designed originally
for technology courses, this program
has proved of considerable interest to
physics teachers. The program
calculates reverberation time of a room
for different sound frequencies. The
design of the room and materials used
in its construction can be varied.
Age range 14 —19 years
Mass Spectrometer is a simulation
of a mass spectrometer allowing
eventual identification of ions in an
'unknown sample'. Other
investigations from a range of supplied
samples may be tried. Further samples
can be added to the simulation.
Age range 16 — 19 years
Photoelectric Effect is a basic
introduction to the photoelectric effect
and Einstein's photoelectric equation
using a computer model and a
simulation of Millikan's apparatus.
Age range 16 —19 years
Eye
Longman Group UK Ltd
£18.50
There are two programs — EYE 1 and
EYE 2 — which demonstrate how the
eye works. The programs show the path
of light from a point on an object to the
retina. The user can alter the distance
of the object from the eye, the size of
the iris (EYE 1 only), the focal length
of the lens, the condition of the eye
and the effect of spectacles (EYE 2
only).
The program calculates whether the
image is in focus for any chosen set of
conditions. The path of light from a
point on the object is plotted using
high resolution graphics. Colour or
black and white displays can be
selected.
The programs are suitable for all
abilities of pupils from the age of
thirteen upwards. Several experiments
can be done before the programs are
used. Programs are not designed to
replace them. Pupils should be familiar
with the biological structure of the eye,
the term 'in focus' and concave and
convex lenses.
Age range 13 —16 years
EDUCATION CURRICULUM AREAS
Measure
AVP Computing
CYG 10
£24.50
This suite of programs aimed at 8 to 13
year old pupils consists of six main
parts: Length, Area, Volume,
Capacity, Mass and Temperature. It
will help pupils to improve their
understanding of different units of
measurement by setting them a number
of questions which test their ability to
measure accurately.
In each program the teacher/pupil
can choose from various options such
as sound and the number of questions.
Excellent graphics are used throughout
to depict the items to be measured, and
on screen help/correction are given
both graphically and in text. Two main
points brought out by each program are
the type of units which should be used
and the need for accuracy. Before the
questions are set important information
is given to the pupil and at the end of
each program their score.
The programs can form the basis of
a project dealing with measurement
and can set up the questions much
quicker than is normal in the
classroom. They can also be used for
class or group demonstrations/
discussions.
RESOURCE
PE061
£29.95
This program makes the best use of
Archimedes graphics. It allows the user
to create their own stories using the
pictures built into the library. The
program allows you to place a number
(up to 200) of pictures or diagrams on
each page and then allows the user to
place their own text to illustrate the
story.
If you are not satisfied with the 150
pictures available to you (including
characters, buildings, trees, flowers
etc) you can design your own. Once
you have finished designing your
electronics story book it can be printed
out and converted into a paper version,
