Plate 4 Left - Diego Velásquez. Spanish. Queen Mariana. 1599-1660. Museo del
Prado. Right - Edgar Degas. French. Mme Edmondo Morbilli, nee Therese De
Gas. 1869, drawing - pastel, private collection.
A movement circles from the Queen's left hand over the red tablecloth to
the dark background, returning over her right hand to the embroidery on the
front of her dress.
The feathers, the Queen's hair, face, neck, and her collar are precisely
located in depth. In contrast, there is a greater separation in depth between her
face and her lower hand. A triangle formed by the red ribbons on her wrists and
hair tilts backwards into depth. Just in front of the apex of the triangle is the red
of her cheeks.
