W’boro’s Annie Chiodo
Credits Wayne EMS, Air Evac
Lifeteam For Her Survival
Waynesboro resident Annie Chiodo (second
from right) credits the Air Evac Lifeteam crew in
Waynesboro and Wayne County EMS for saving
her life following a severe stroke in 2010. She is
pictured with (from left) pilot Ken Gilliam, Base
Clinical Lead Ginger Hill and fl ight paramedic
Scotty Brewer.
For longtime Waynesboro
Water Systems
Manager Annie Chiodo,
a recovery from a lifethreatening
medical
emergency last year was
made possible by two
local agencies that, by
her own admission, are
the true heroes in her
survival story.
Chiodo, who suffered
a total of seven strokes
in April 2010, credits
the quick actions of the
Wayne County EMS
and the Waynesboro Air
Evac Lifeteam crew after
suffering her fi rst stroke
for her nearly 100 percent
recovery. That Spring,
the Waynesboro woman
suffered a nearly fatal
brain bleed that left her
immobilized, and both
agencies worked together
to get Chiodo the lifesaving
medical care she
needed at Florence ECM
Hospital.
“They saved my life and
gave it back to me, and
they will always be in my
heart,” said the longtime
Waynesboro resident.
“They are my true heroes,
and I wouldn’t trade them
for anything.”
The fi rst signs of trouble
appeared while Chiodo
was relaxing at home with
husband Sam, she said. “I
remember sitting there
with my husband, and
suddenly I wasn’t able
to talk,” she explained.
“I knew something was
wrong, so I patted Sam’s
arm to get his attention
and he called 911.”
Chiodo collapsed shortly
afterward and was rushed
by the Wayne County
EMS directly to the Air
Evac Lifeteam base at
915 Andrew Jackson. The
Air Evac helicopter then
transported Chiodo to
Florence ECM Hospital
to get the medical care
she needed.
Although she remembers
little from the actual
fl ight, Chiodo recalls
being loaded into the
red, white and blue Air
Evac helicopter. She also
recalls all the follow-up
phone calls by the Air
Evac crew to check on
her condition. “They
stayed in touch, and that
really meant a lot to me,”
she said.
Air Evac Lifeteam, with
ten locations in Tennessee
and 105 nationally, is the
preeminent air medical
provider in the central
United States, and
provides rapid medical
transport for patients
like Chiodo who have
suffered life-threatening
medical emergencies. The
Waynesboro Air Evac
crew is led by Program
Director Glynn Mooney,
who is in charge of all
operations at the base.
Chiodo’s health scare
continued a week later
as she suffered some
additional small strokes,
and she ended up back at
Florence ECM. She then
spent nearly four months
at Hermann Memorial
Hospital in Houston,
Texas, for the physical,
speech, occupational,
and optical post-stroke
therapy she needed.
Although she
occasionally has trouble
“getting the right words
out” and with two fi ngers
on her left hand not
completely recovered,
she proudly says she is
“nearly normal” despite
her ordeal 18 months
ago. “Well, I’m as close
to normal as I’m going
to get,” laughed Chiodo,
who then continued her
praise for the Wayne
County EMS and Air
Evac Lifeteam.
“I couldn’t have asked
for better care from either
group, and they work very
well together,” she said.
“Both of those groups
are just awesome, and
not only do I trust them
with my life, butwith my
family’s lives as well.”
Air Evac Lifeteam,
headquartered in West
Plains, Mo., is the largest
independently-owned air
ambulance service in the
participation in athletics
based on TSSAA
guidelines, clarifying the
number of high school
credits needed to stay
on track for graduation
each year, and changing
the requirement for
approval of overnight
trips to colleges from two
readings to one.
Grinder stated that
requiring two readings
for approval for a college
campus visit was not
practical due to the short
notice given by colleges
when scheduling visits.
The fi rst reading passed
so the board will conduct
a second and fi nal reading
on these policy reviews.
Trojans Opens ‘11-12
Basketball Season
The Collinwood Trojans
basketball team opened
their regular season Nov.
18 th at Richland. After
pulling out to a 17 – 11
lead at the end of the fi rst
quarter, the Trojans held
off a late game surge
by the Raiders to fi nish
with the 70-67 victory.
Balanced scoring was the
story for the night with
fi ve players in double
digits, with Ethan Butler
and Kyle Pope leading
the way with 16 and 13
points tallied. Also getting
in the action was Hunter
Andrews with 11, Wesley
Pigg and Jacob Daniel
with 10 a piece, while
Jace Brewer and Tucker
Robertson rounding out
the scoring with 7 and 3
points respectively.
The following night the
Trojans were back on the
road traveling to Santa
Fe High School. After
getting down 21-10 at the
end of the 1 st quarter, the
Trojans fought back to cut
the lead to 6 at halftime.
The 3 rd quarter was a
dominating performance
by the visiting team, with
Collinwood outscoring
the opponent 23-3. With a
20 point lead, the Trojans
coasted home with a 63-
51 victory. Once again,
four players contributed
double digits led again
by Ethan Butler with 17.
Close on his heels was
Hunter Andrews with 15
and Jacob Daniel tallying
13. Also contributing
with points was Wesley
Pigg pouring in 10,
Connor Martin dropping
5, and Pope adding 3 for
the Trojans.
After a weather
cancellation the
following week, The
Trojans opened action
back up at Collinwood
on Nov. 28. The week off
from action proved to be
hard to overcome for the
Trojans. They dropped
their fi rst game of the
year to Hampshire by a
score of 63-58. Even with
a lead at halftime and the
end of the third quarter,
they were unable to hold
on for the win. Eight team
members scored in the
loss led by Jacob Daniel
with 15 and Ethan Butler
with 10. Also tallying
points on the night were
Andrews with 9, Pope
and Robertson with 7
a piece, Pigg dropping
5, Martin with 3, and
Brewer adding 2 for the
Trojans.
The Trojans welcomed
in Belmont, MS High
School on December 2.
With a solid performance,
Collinwood led the
whole night and cruised
to a 62-59 victory. Once
again several teammates
added to the scoring tally
led by Ethan Butler with
16 and Hunter Andrews
spilling in 14. Following
in double digits was
Tucker Robertson with
11, Wesley Pigg and Jace
Brewer with 10 on the
night. Pope rounded out
the nights scoring with a
free throw made.
On Saturday, the
Collinwood team played
a rescheduled game
welcoming Cascade to
town. After leading by
6 at the half, the Trojans
coasted to a 56-44
victory. Hunter Andrews
and Ethan Butler led the
team in scoring, pouring
in 13 and 12 points. Also
in double digits were
Wesley Pigg and Jacob
Daniel with 10 a piece.
Rounding out the scoring
for the Trojans on the
night was freshman
Kelby Ray dropping 8
points and Martin adding
3 points.
While the season has
begun with a positive 4
and 1 mark for the team,
the players realize that
the season is young and
they have a long way
to go. With the district
week, focus is the theme
for the players. Despite
their youth, the Trojans
have their sights set on
a competitive district
and regular season. The
team would like to thank
the people who have
been coming out and
supporting them at all
‘Cats Down Cardinals,
LadyCats Lose Two
The WCHS Wildcats
traveled to Adamsville
Monday night and took
a win from the host
Cardinals 58 – 52. The
‘Cats, coming off a
football championship,
welcomed back
members of that squad
to the hardwood. The
‘Cats had been soundly
defeated Saturday night
at McNairy Central, 70
– 29. The Ladycats hung
tough with both the Lady
Bobcats and the Lady
Cardinals, but dropped
both games 52 – 44 and
56 – 44. The Wildcats are
now an even 3 – 3 on the
year, while the Ladycats
stand at 2 – 4. They face
off with Frank Hughes on
Tuesday night at Clifton
before returning home
to face Summertown on
Friday night and then
host Hickman County on
the 16th.
Against McNairy, the
Ladycats fell behind early
and were unable to catch
up, trailing 28 – 19 at the
half. They went on an 11
– 2 run at the beginning
of the third period to tie
the contest at 30 all at
about the halfway point
of the quarter. McNairy
fought back and went
back on top behind a 17 –
2 run to fi nish the quarter
with a 47 – 34 advantage.
They went on to take the
win, 55 – 44.
Taylor Hatcher led the
team in scoring with 12
points. She had 8 boards,
3 blocks, a steal and an
assist. Kelsey Risner had
a double-double with 11
points and 10 rebounds.
She also had a pair of
steals and an assist.
Hayley Inman scored 6
points and had 3 boards,
a steal, and an assist, and
Cassie Mathis and Kristen
Crews each scored 4
NEWS
If you like to sit near
a window, sipping a cup
of coffee or hot chocolate
and watch birds fl y up
to your feeder to eat,
you might be a little
disappointed to hear that
birdseed, like many other
things that we buy, is
getting more expensive.
So what alternatives do
you have besides leaving
your feeders empty?
Your fi rst option is to
purchase specifi c types
of seeds and make your
own mix. Sure there are
bird seed mixes out there,
but birds have distinct
food preferences just like
you and I. Some of the
Saffl ower seeds attract
Nuthatches, Finches,
Cardinals, Grosbeaks,
and Titmice. You can
use Nyjer (thistle) seeds
if you specifi cally want
to attract Finches, and
Suet, which is beef
fat that comes in seed,
fruit, or worm-packed
cakes is attractive to
Chickadees, Nuthatches,
Jays, Woodpeckers,
and Titmice. Insectfi
lled Suet even attracts
Bluebirds.
By purchasing seeds
and making your own
mix, you can avoid
spending money on
species you don’t want
around, but the cost can
still be quite high if you
feed a large number of
birds over an extended
period. You can lessen
this strain by doing one
or many of these options.
First, birds are
notorious for spilling
seeds. When your feeder
goes empty, let it stay
that way for a day or two.
The birds won’t starve,
but instead will clean
up many of the seeds
that were knocked to the
ground.
Another option is to
use alternative feeds.
Peanuts, chopped pieces
of fruit, vegetables, bread
and other grain-based
products like cereal and
oats all attract birds, and
you may attract some
species you didn’t even
know were around. Since
some of these food items
are highly perishable, it’s
best to use them a little
along, and store the rest
to avoid degradation.
The last option I’ll
mention, but certainly
not the last option that’s
available to you, is grow
your own bird seed.
Sunfl owers are extremely
attractive in and around
any home garden. When
the petals fall, and the
1208 N. Locust Ave., Lawrenceburg, TN • 931-242-4162 • 931-762-5137
heads dry, cut the stalk
just below the head and
store in a cool, dry place
away from rodents.
When winter comes
around, you can either
remove the seeds and
pour them into a feeder,
or leave the head whole.
When skewered upright
on a bird platform, birds
can land and remove the
seeds themselves.
Bossing God
God created us to
Worship Him. He wants
our undivided attention.
I’m like that. I like a lot
of attention. I shall now
try to get yours for a
Apostle Paul said to those
Corinthians, “If I don’t
gonna make me happy?
In addition to praising
God, I believe he also
created me for His own
amusement. Don’t you
know he’s bound to get
tickled at us tiny creatures
trying to act big. He
probably laughs and asks
his “sidekick” Gabriel,
“What was I thinking?
I like to boss God
around. The other
morning I got up and told
Him, “I’m up now; You
can go ahead and raise
the sun.” You know He
did! I love Him more
when he’s faithful to obey
me. And guess what? He
knows when I’m joking
with Him. I’m hooked
up to His heart monitor.
But I’m selective
creating homemade
for the busy family.
about what I order God
to do. That’s what makes
me so successful. It’s
kinda like I ordered my
Margie not to touch that
garbage can. She knows
better and doesn’t whine
and complain. I push
it out to the road every
week. That’s my job. I
put my food down and
she fell right in line.
You’ve got to take your
God-given authority
over those women.
I won’t tell God to mow
my yard. I don’t want
Him show favoritism. It
wouldn’t be fair for Him
to mow my yard and not
my neighbors. But He
always likes to with me
when I mow. I have a
push mower so I walk.
The Lord is used to that.
He walked everywhere
He went. He even walked
on water. He’s got a lot of
nerve. Ain’t that kinda
dangerous? I don’t do
that unless it’s iced over.
He probably wants to
say a lot more, but I’m
gonna “make” Him hush.
I don’t know why He
spends so much time with
me; I’m not that great.
We’ll see ya’ll later.
While only a small
percentage of checks
mailed out by the IRS are
returned as undelivered,
taxpayers can put an
end to lost, stolen or
undelivered checks by
choosing direct deposit
when they fi le either paper
or electronic returns.
Last year, more than 78.4
Taxpayers can receive
refunds directly into their
bank account, split a tax
even buy a savings bond.
The IRS also recommends
that taxpayers fi le their
reduces errors on tax
Why sell my house at auction rather than
list it?
Isn’t that a desperate measure?
Why put a price on your property and limit the value? Why
put your life on hold while waiting for someone to make an
offer? Why inconvenience yourself for showings? Why wait
for loan approval or a qualifi ed buyer? Why wait for a home
inspection? Why wait? Why wait? The auction method is the
only way to realize full value of your home or property and
gives you the ability to get on with your life. You take control
of the sales process. You set the date and time that your
property will sell, as well as the terms and conditions.
How do you advertise/market the sale?
Your property is showcased in newspaper ads, promotional
fl yers, direct mail campaigns, and e-mail notifi cation to all
potential buyers and interested agents.
How much do you think it will bring?
What if I don’t get offered what I want,
do I have to sell it?
These are our most commonly asked questions. The
best answer is “Fair Market Value”. We don’t know what
the property will bring until the sale is over. Through our
marketing campaign, we assure your property is showcased
to all potential buyers in the marketplace the day of your sale.
You, as the seller, reserve the right to reject the fi nal offer.
Valley Blood Services
Region. “By donating
blood, you can give
someone an opportunity
to spend another holiday
with their loved ones.”
It only takes about an
hour to donate blood. In
that hour, you can unwrap
a lifetime of memories
for hospital patients in
your community and
If you want to have a good day — and who doesn’t? — it helps to start your day with
a positive affirmation, such as: “Today is going to be a great day,” or “It’s great to be
alive.” Better yet: “Thank you God for giving me this wonderful day.” Whether we
actually feel this way or not, saying it will help put us in a more positive frame of mind.
It is well-established that the simple act of smiling activates certain neural pathways
that make us feel happier, while the act of frowning activates
pathways that can make us feel depressed. Jumping
out of bed in the morning with a happy heart and a
big smile on our face will make us feel happy and
energetic, whereas moping around and mumbling about
how lousy we feel will understandably make us feel lousy,
and perhaps depressed. We must act first, and then
the appropriate feeling will come, not the other
way around. That is, if we want to be energetic,
we should start moving and acting energetically.
If we sit around waiting for the energetic felling
to come, we will probably be disappointed.
We should start acting happy and energetic,
and soon we will discover that we truly are.
A Cheerful heart is a good medicine, but a Downcast
spirit dries up the bones.
