Trojans Opens ‘11-12<br />

Basketball Season<br />

The Collinwood Trojans<br />

basketball team opened<br />

their regular season Nov.<br />

18 th at Richland. After<br />

pulling out to a 17 – 11<br />

lead at the end of the fi rst<br />

quarter, the Trojans held<br />

off a late game surge<br />

by the Raiders to fi nish<br />

with the 70-67 victory.<br />

Balanced scoring was the<br />

story for the night with<br />

fi ve players in double<br />

digits, with Ethan Butler<br />

and Kyle Pope leading<br />

the way with 16 and 13<br />

points tallied. Also getting<br />

in the action was Hunter<br />

Andrews with 11, Wesley<br />

Pigg and Jacob Daniel<br />

with 10 a piece, while<br />

Jace Brewer and Tucker<br />

Robertson rounding out<br />

the scoring with 7 and 3<br />

points respectively.<br />

The following night the<br />

Trojans were back on the<br />

road traveling to Santa<br />

Fe High School. After<br />

getting down 21-10 at the<br />

end of the 1 st quarter, the<br />

Trojans fought back to cut<br />

the lead to 6 at halftime.<br />

The 3 rd quarter was a<br />

dominating performance<br />

by the visiting team, with<br />

Collinwood outscoring<br />

the opponent 23-3. With a<br />

20 point lead, the Trojans<br />

coasted home with a 63-<br />

51 victory. Once again,<br />

four players contributed<br />

double digits led again<br />

by Ethan Butler with 17.<br />

Close on his heels was<br />

Hunter Andrews with 15<br />

and Jacob Daniel tallying<br />

13. Also contributing<br />

with points was Wesley<br />

Pigg pouring in 10,<br />

Connor Martin dropping<br />

5, and Pope adding 3 for<br />

the Trojans.<br />

After a weather<br />

cancellation the<br />

following week, The<br />

Trojans opened action<br />

back up at Collinwood<br />

on Nov. 28. The week off<br />

from action proved to be<br />

hard to overcome for the<br />

Trojans. They dropped<br />

their fi rst game of the<br />

year to Hampshire by a<br />

score of 63-58. Even with<br />

a lead at halftime and the<br />

end of the third quarter,<br />

they were unable to hold<br />

on for the win. Eight team<br />

members scored in the<br />

loss led by Jacob Daniel<br />

with 15 and Ethan Butler<br />

with 10. Also tallying<br />

points on the night were<br />

Andrews with 9, Pope<br />

and Robertson with 7<br />

a piece, Pigg dropping<br />

5, Martin with 3, and<br />

Brewer adding 2 for the<br />

Trojans.<br />

The Trojans welcomed<br />

in Belmont, MS High<br />

School on December 2.<br />

With a solid performance,<br />

Collinwood led the<br />

whole night and cruised<br />

to a 62-59 victory. Once<br />

again several teammates<br />

added to the scoring tally<br />

led by Ethan Butler with<br />

16 and Hunter Andrews<br />

spilling in 14. Following<br />

in double digits was<br />

Tucker Robertson with<br />

11, Wesley Pigg and Jace<br />

Brewer with 10 on the<br />

night. Pope rounded out<br />

the nights scoring with a<br />

free throw made.<br />

On Saturday, the<br />

Collinwood team played<br />

a rescheduled game<br />

welcoming Cascade to<br />

town. After leading by<br />

6 at the half, the Trojans<br />

coasted to a 56-44<br />

victory. Hunter Andrews<br />

and Ethan Butler led the<br />

team in scoring, pouring<br />

in 13 and 12 points. Also<br />

in double digits were<br />

Wesley Pigg and Jacob<br />

Daniel with 10 a piece.<br />

Rounding out the scoring<br />

for the Trojans on the<br />

night was freshman<br />

Kelby Ray dropping 8<br />

points and Martin adding<br />

3 points.<br />

While the season has<br />

begun with a positive 4<br />

and 1 mark for the team,<br />

the players realize that<br />

the season is young and<br />

they have a long way<br />

to go. With the district<br />

schedule beginning this<br />

week, focus is the theme<br />

for the players. Despite<br />

their youth, the Trojans<br />

have their sights set on<br />

a competitive district<br />

and regular season. The<br />

team would like to thank<br />

the people who have<br />

been coming out and<br />

supporting them at all<br />

the games this season.<br />

The season rolls on with<br />

Loretto coming to town<br />

on December 6 th and a<br />

visit to Perry <strong>County</strong><br />

on December 9 th . Go<br />

‘Cats Down Cardinals,<br />

LadyCats Lose Two<br />

The WCHS Wildcats<br />

traveled to Adamsville<br />

Monday night and took<br />

a win from the host<br />

Cardinals 58 – 52. The<br />

‘Cats, coming off a<br />

football championship,<br />

welcomed back<br />

members of that squad<br />

to the hardwood. The<br />

‘Cats had been soundly<br />

defeated Saturday night<br />

at McNairy Central, 70<br />

– 29. The Ladycats hung<br />

tough with both the Lady<br />

Bobcats and the Lady<br />

Cardinals, but dropped<br />

both games 52 – 44 and<br />

56 – 44. The Wildcats are<br />

now an even 3 – 3 on the<br />

year, while the Ladycats<br />

stand at 2 – 4. They face<br />

off with Frank Hughes on<br />

Tuesday night at Clifton<br />

before returning home<br />

to face Summertown on<br />

Friday night and then<br />

host Hickman <strong>County</strong> on<br />

the 16th.<br />

Against McNairy, the<br />

Ladycats fell behind early<br />

and were unable to catch<br />

up, trailing 28 – 19 at the<br />

half. They went on an 11<br />

– 2 run at the beginning<br />

of the third period to tie<br />

the contest at 30 all at<br />

about the halfway point<br />

of the quarter. McNairy<br />

fought back and went<br />

back on top behind a 17 –<br />

2 run to fi nish the quarter<br />

with a 47 – 34 advantage.<br />

They went on to take the<br />

win, 55 – 44.<br />

Taylor Hatcher led the<br />

team in scoring with 12<br />

points. She had 8 boards,<br />

3 blocks, a steal and an<br />

assist. Kelsey Risner had<br />

a double-double with 11<br />

points and 10 rebounds.<br />

She also had a pair of<br />

steals and an assist.<br />

Hayley Inman scored 6<br />

points and had 3 boards,<br />

a steal, and an assist, and<br />

Cassie Mathis and Kristen<br />

Crews each scored 4<br />

points. Mthis had a pair<br />

of boards, a block, and<br />

an assist, while Crews<br />

had 2 rebounds. Morgan<br />

Mathis had 3 points and<br />

an assist, and Stacey<br />

Creecy and Sam Skelton<br />
