If you like to sit near
a window, sipping a cup
of coffee or hot chocolate
and watch birds fl y up
to your feeder to eat,
you might be a little
disappointed to hear that
birdseed, like many other
things that we buy, is
getting more expensive.
So what alternatives do
you have besides leaving
your feeders empty?
Your fi rst option is to
purchase specifi c types
of seeds and make your
own mix. Sure there are
bird seed mixes out there,
but birds have distinct
food preferences just like
you and I. Some of the
unintentional birds that
Saffl ower seeds attract
Nuthatches, Finches,
Cardinals, Grosbeaks,
and Titmice. You can
use Nyjer (thistle) seeds
if you specifi cally want
to attract Finches, and
Suet, which is beef
fat that comes in seed,
fruit, or worm-packed
cakes is attractive to
Chickadees, Nuthatches,
Jays, Woodpeckers,
and Titmice. Insectfi
lled Suet even attracts
Bluebirds.
By purchasing seeds
and making your own
mix, you can avoid
spending money on
species you don’t want
around, but the cost can
still be quite high if you
feed a large number of
birds over an extended
period. You can lessen
this strain by doing one
or many of these options.
First, birds are
notorious for spilling
seeds. When your feeder
goes empty, let it stay
that way for a day or two.
The birds won’t starve,
but instead will clean
up many of the seeds
that were knocked to the
ground.
Another option is to
use alternative feeds.
Peanuts, chopped pieces
of fruit, vegetables, bread
and other grain-based
products like cereal and
oats all attract birds, and
you may attract some
species you didn’t even
know were around. Since
some of these food items
are highly perishable, it’s
best to use them a little
along, and store the rest
to avoid degradation.
The last option I’ll
mention, but certainly
not the last option that’s
available to you, is grow
your own bird seed.
Sunfl owers are extremely
attractive in and around
any home garden. When
the petals fall, and the
1208 N. Locust Ave., Lawrenceburg, TN • 931-242-4162 • 931-762-5137
heads dry, cut the stalk
just below the head and
store in a cool, dry place
away from rodents.
When winter comes
around, you can either
remove the seeds and
pour them into a feeder,
or leave the head whole.
When skewered upright
on a bird platform, birds
can land and remove the
seeds themselves.
Merry Heart
By Max Franks
Bossing God
God created us to
Worship Him. He wants
our undivided attention.
I’m like that. I like a lot
of attention. I shall now
try to get yours for a
few minutes. It’s like the
Apostle Paul said to those
Corinthians, “If I don’t
make yall happy who’s
gonna make me happy?
In addition to praising
God, I believe he also
created me for His own
amusement. Don’t you
know he’s bound to get
tickled at us tiny creatures
trying to act big. He
probably laughs and asks
his “sidekick” Gabriel,
“What was I thinking?
I like to boss God
around. The other
morning I got up and told
Him, “I’m up now; You
can go ahead and raise
the sun.” You know He
did! I love Him more
when he’s faithful to obey
me. And guess what? He
knows when I’m joking
with Him. I’m hooked
up to His heart monitor.
But I’m selective
service idea would be
creating homemade
healthy frozen meals
for the busy family.
about what I order God
to do. That’s what makes
me so successful. It’s
kinda like I ordered my
Margie not to touch that
garbage can. She knows
better and doesn’t whine
and complain. I push
it out to the road every
week. That’s my job. I
put my food down and
she fell right in line.
You’ve got to take your
God-given authority
over those women.
I won’t tell God to mow
my yard. I don’t want
Him show favoritism. It
wouldn’t be fair for Him
to mow my yard and not
my neighbors. But He
always likes to with me
when I mow. I have a
push mower so I walk.
The Lord is used to that.
He walked everywhere
He went. He even walked
on water. He’s got a lot of
nerve. Ain’t that kinda
dangerous? I don’t do
that unless it’s iced over.
He probably wants to
say a lot more, but I’m
gonna “make” Him hush.
I don’t know why He
spends so much time with
me; I’m not that great.
We’ll see ya’ll later.
