Volume Label<br />

A volume label is 80 characters long and<br />

identifies the volume and its owner.<br />

Figure 30 shows the volume label format.<br />

illustration. Figure 30A shows the ASCII<br />

tape volume label format. A description of<br />

the fields follows the illustration.<br />

Magnetic tape volumes. the volume label<br />

is the first record on the tape. On<br />

nine-track tape it is written in EBCDIC, on<br />

seven-track tape in BCD.<br />

On direct access volumes, it is record<br />

number three, following the two IPL<br />

records. It is recorded as an 84 byte<br />

physical record consisting of a 4 byte key<br />

area containing 'VOLl', and an 80 byte data<br />

area. Both areas are written in EBCDIC.<br />
