Cataloguing Head of Section: Ms. Breda Long REPORT OF THE LIBRARY POLICY COMMITTEE 2001/2002 The role of the Cataloguing section, that of classifying, cataloguing and processing incoming materials in readiness for access on the open shelves continues to be a vital part of the Library service. In addition to ongoing accessions, the section undertook a much needed re-classification project in the Social Sciences during the year. The problems associated with database transfer in 1997 are still outstanding. These include incorrect indicators creating mis-filing, field tagging errors causing filing anomalies, and lack of authority control. Within the Boole Library, the major areas that still need to be re-classified are Education, Public Administration and Religion. Cataloguing of the library purchased from the Vincentian Monastery in the early summer was continued. Among the donations to the Library which were catalogued this year was the Library of Vincent Tucker. Further contributions to the John de Courcy Ireland and Humour Collections were also catalogued Electronic Journals The number of serials titles in the catalogue with a direct link to the full text online journal site continues to increase. The number increased from last year (590) to 823 titles. Re-Cataloguing & Projects The re-cataloguing of the Official Publications Centre continues. The main divisions - IRL, EDC, UK and INT have been completed. A reference collection, together with some small groupings, remains to be done. Selected items from the collection were exhibited for the biennial conference of the Early Books Society held in U.C.C. in mid-July. 10
REPORT OF THE LIBRARY POLICY COMMITTEE 2001/2002 INFORMATION SERVICES DIVISION 1 Head of Division: Ms. Margot Conrick The Information Services Division aims to further the University’s academic, research and outreach goals by providing quality, comprehensive information resources and services, in a traditional and digital or ‘hybrid’ context. Inflation of research journal subscriptions continued to force cancellations in many departments. Modularisation, the increased divisional emphasis and effort put into orientation and information skills teaching/training and wider access to user focused electronic resources, resulted in much greater use of materials in all areas. A number of newly appointed Assistant Librarians took up their posts on the 1 st October, 2001. Richard Bradfield took up the new role of Engineering, Food Science and IT Librarian while Catherine Clehane embraced the new role of Part-Time Nursing and Paramedical Studies Librarian. Olivia Fitzpatrick was appointed to the vacant post of Arts & Humanities Librarian. Unfortunately, due to staff cuts, the approved post of Business & Economics Librarian was not filled. The division implemented an agreed ‘new model’, whereby each Subject Librarian is empowered to exercise their professional functions to a greater degree and to become more of a “Faculty Librarian”. To achieve this the day-to-day supervisory role has been delegated, to a much greater extent, to the Senior Library Assistant. The Subject Librarian assumes a more active role as liaison with students, academic and research staff. In addition, each Subject Librarian assumed an additional, special responsibility, catering for hitherto poorly accommodated service aspects. Each Subject Librarian was allocated an area of special responsibility from the following list: Electronic Resources & the Web (Richard Bradfield); Information Skills Training (Rosarii Buttimer); Lifelong Learning (adult, open, distance, etc.) (Catherine Clehane); Staff Training (Úna Ní Chonghaile); Collection Access & Management (to include brochures, signage, etc.) (Helen Mulcahy); Collection Development (to include off-Site & heritage) (Olivia Fitzpatrick) EU Developments (Valerie Fletcher); Reference/Information Services (to include Information Services desks & the general Information Desk) * *; Marketing/Publicity/Development*. Advantages accruing from this change include much more successful participation in the research process, not only at Assistant Librarian level but also at Library Assistant level. Information Services staff have responded well to the daily challenges being posed by the continually changing hybrid environment and are well placed to function as guides to vast information resources within and beyond UCC. 1 A more detailed report of the activities of this division is available * Functions not yet assigned 11
