as we walked along the ramparts of Carcassonne, we
easily imagined ourselves
back in the Middle Ages.
The value of travel.
The most valuable things in
life are not our possessions, but
rather the experiences that bring
us closer to each other and to
ourselves. That is why, since
founding Abercrombie & Kent
in 1962, I still regard travel as the
most fulfilling and worthwhile
pastime. No purchase or
investment provides greater
lifelong value than an inspiring
journey shared with family
and friends.
Our goal at Abercrombie &
Kent has always been to provide
such inspiring journeys. Our
itineraries include A&K’s
customary insider access
opportunities, and our escorted
group journeys are led by a
resident A&K Tour Director, an
amiable travelling companion
with unmatched knowledge
of the destinations on your
itinerary.
Though your vacation may end
in a matter of days or weeks,
its benefits do not. You and
the friends and family with
whom you travel will savor your
experiences together long after
returning home. The people you
meet and the sights you see will
continue to provide inspiring
memories. This is value in the
truest sense of the word: a lasting
gift to yourself that will only
improve as the years advance.
Read this brochure, and
let us welcome you on an
unforgettable journey.
cycling along the towpath gave us the opportunity to
witness daily life in France
up close.
Discovering Europe by water.
Rivers and canals flow from bustling cities to quaint
hamlets, linking the towns and villages of Western Europe.
Everywhere there are tranquil yet breathtaking landscapes.
Follow these waterways on board a comfortable barge or
river cruiser and encounter a quieter, more relaxed side of
Europe, revealed to you at a leisurely pace with attentive
personal service.
Each barge is decorated in its own style, with interiors
ranging from humble French country to grand English
manor styles. Meals are included in every sailing, prepared
by on-board chefs and served in inviting surroundings.
Set out on a hotel sailing and join other like-minded
travellers or charter a private departure with family and
friends. In addition, you may arrange theme cruises —
sailings specifically tailored to match your group’s or
family’s interests. Our suggestions include:
Semaine des Grand Crus (Wines of Burgundy).
Sophisticated charter barge ‘Amaryllis’ offers two special
hotel sailings in July for an unmissable opportunity to taste
all 33 Grand Cru wines of Burgundy. Representing the
very heart and soul of the region, these renowned varieties
include Bonne Mares, Montrachet and Romanée Conti.
The barge cruising experience.
Culinary Cruise. If your passion is cooking, consider
a luxury cruise on ‘Alouette’ in the south of France.
Cruise on the beautiful Canal du Midi, enjoying handson
cookery lessons in the barge’s well-equipped kitchen.
Accompany the chef to morning markets to select the
freshest ingredients — then indulge in the tasty fruits of
your labors, including delicacies such as rack of lamb
with red wine and tarragon and tarte au citron with
caramel sauce.
London Theater Cruise. Drama buffs can indulge
themselves on a ‘Magna Carta’ West End theater cruise
on London’s River Thames. Take the celebrated Theatre
Royal Drury Lane backstage tour, followed by your first
production in the West End. Savor smoked salmon on
a champagne picnic and tour Shakespeare’s Globe, a
reconstruction of the Bard’s original playhouse in
central London.
Since the dawn of mankind,
waterways have provided lifelines
between civilizations that evolved
along their shores. When you
cruise Scotland’s Caledonian Canal,
England’s River Thames or Ireland’s
River Shannon and Loch Derg, see
how these important bodies of water
have influenced history and created
fascinating legends.
Macbeth’s castle. Loch Ness and its
legendary monster. Runnymede and
the Magna Carta. Irish ring forts
and early Christian dwellings. All of
these sites are available for up-close
and personal exploration on a barge
cruise in Great Britain or Ireland. You
also get a glimpse of local life when
you leave the barge to visit charming
waterside villages, manor homes,
gardens and nature parks.
Admire the landmarks, residences and
monuments dedicated to early royalty
and be treated like kings and queens
on board when you dine on gourmet
meals prepared by your barge’s chef,
while savoring vintage wines served by
an attentive crew member.
With superb sightseeing, gourmet
cuisine and excellent on-board service
you have the ideal mix for a relaxing
and refreshing holiday that gives you
a close-up view of the “backyards”
of local life in the United Kingdom
Cruise the magnificent Canal du Midi,
a UNESCO World Heritage Site that
was commissioned by Louis XIV in
the 17th century. With 328 locks,
aqueducts, bridges and tunnels, its
tree-lined route is one of the most
beautiful in France. Graceful ‘Roi Soleil’
glides through the remarkably diverse
landscape of the canal — from the
rugged, rural Languedoc to the sundrenched
blue of the Mediterranean
— on a thoroughly captivating journey.
From Beziers, the center of the wine
trade in southern France, visit the
Roman colony of Narbonne with its
unfinished 13th-century Cathédrale
St-Just and the fortified medieval

spirituality of l’Abbaye de Fontfroide,
lovingly restored in the early 20th
CAMARGUE
Avignon to Béziers or reverse
Avignon, home to the spectacular
14th-century Palais des Papes (Palace
this glorious exploration of the culture,
history and “good life” for which
Provence is famous. Wonderful treasures
await in the shops of St. Quentin de la
Potterie, Uzés and St-Rémy. Visit les
Baux-de-Provence, spectacularly set
on a rocky outcrop, and marvel at the
Roman aqueduct Pont du Gard — or
simply relax in the tranquil landscapes.
‘Roi Soleil’ then calls at Arles with its
Roman ruins and van Gogh landscapes
before entering the Camargue, a region

populated by flamingo, wild white
horse and black bull. Not to be missed
are Aigues-Mortes, a walled medieval
fishermen spread their nets. Continue
to Agde, hailed by Marco Polo as the
historically important. Originating in
Switzerland, it flows northward to Basel
and into Germany, flanked by mighty
castles. Its scenic wine towns offer
charming vineyard views. Through the
ages, the Rhine has been immortalized
in story and song, including romantic
epic poetry and Wagner’s opera
The River Danube, second longest
in Europe, begins in Germany’s Black
Forest. Though it winds through ten
countries on its way to the Black Sea,
one-third lies in Hungary — and
Budapest is its undisputed queen.
Offering both pastoral scenery and
rugged beauty, the Danube has inspired
countless musicians and artists with its
richly textured landscape.
The River Main, a tributary of the
Rhine, flows through Bavaria and
its neighboring states in southern
Germany. It has been connected to the
Danube since 1992 by the Rhine-Main-
Danube Canal. With vine-clad hills and
forested areas along its banks, the Main
twists and turns past ancient towns
and villages that are rich in medieval
architecture.
CRUISE ROUTES: All cruise routes are subject to change without
notice. Some waterways may be subject to occasional closures due
to drought, storms, floods, canal or lock repairs or other unforeseen
circumstances that can make navigation unsafe or impossible. In the
unlikely event of such an occurrence, the following conditions may
apply: (1) if navigation must be suspended, passengers will continue to
be accommodated on the stationary vessel and regular excursions will
continue to be made, with cruising to be continued as soon as possible;
Terms & Conditions
For departure dates, prices and detailed terms and conditions, refer to the accompanying
Canal & River Cruising in Europe: Dates & Pricing booklet
or visit abercrombiekent.com.
PRICES AND ARRANGEMENTS: Quoted program prices
include planning, handling and operational charges and are based on
current rates of exchange, tariffs and taxes. A&K reserves the right
to increase program prices to cover increased costs, tariffs, taxes and
V.A.T. received after prices are published and to reflect fluctuations
in foreign exchange markets. A&K is under no obligation to give a
breakdown in costs involving any Canal & River Cruising program.
Modification of program content to accommodate a smaller group size
will not affect the published program price.
EARLY ARRIVAL: A&K recommends that you arrive a day or two
before the start of your planned program to allow time to relax and
refresh after your journey. To help you prepare for the start of your
tour, A&K has negotiated favorable overnight rates at many hotels;
please ask for details at time of booking. Departing early from the U.S.
and Canada during the winter months is strongly recommended, due
to possible flight disruptions and cancellations caused by inclement
weather.
ACTIVE ELEMENTS: Some active elements have been incorporated
into select itineraries. To enjoy the trip as intended, a minimum level of
fitness is required. A&K will require notice if any participant has any
physical or other condition or disability that could create a hazard to
him or herself or to other members of the group. A&K reserves the right
to decline acceptance of anyone whom it considers unsuitable due to
fitness level. A&K also reserves the right to remove from the trip, at
the participant’s own expense, anyone whose condition is such that it
could create a hazard to him or herself or others, or otherwise impact
the enjoyment of other passengers. SHOULD YOU HAVE ANY
QUESTIONS OR NEED ANY CLARIFICATION ABOUT
A SPECIFIC PROGRAM, PLEASE ASK FOR DETAILS AT
TIME OF BOOKING.
A&K’S PASSENGER TRAVEL PROTECTION PLAN:
Our specially designed travel protection program, which provides
cancellation coverage, medical coverage and protection against lost or
damaged luggage, is not included in the program price and is strongly
recommended. Please see page 77 for more details. (An alternative
policy is available for barge charters.)
CHILD POLICY: Please refer to individual cruise pages for the child
policy applicable to each vessel.
PASSPORTS AND VISAS: Valid passports are required for all
international destinations. Check with your travel agent or A&K for the
latest visa requirements. Please note that non-U.S. passport holders
are responsible for obtaining the required documentation applicable
for entry. Passports must be valid for six (6) months after the return
of your journey and should also have sufficient blank pages for visas
and immigrations stamps. A&K cannot be held responsible should
you be denied entry to a country due to non-compliance with these
requirements. A copy of your valid passport must be submitted to A&K
in order to confirm air reservations.
Additional hotel nights and other extra services booked in connection
with Canal & River Cruising programs are subject to the following:
advance will be charged 100% of the price.
increased by the fact that these trips take place in remote locations, far
from medical facilities. Passenger assumes all such risks associated with
participating in this trip.
Cruising in Europe brochure.
®
cycling along the towpath gave us the opportunity to witness
daily life in France
up close.
Discovering Europe by water.
Rivers and canals flow from bustling cities to quaint hamlets,
linking the towns and villages of Western Europe. Everywhere
there are tranquil yet breathtaking landscapes.
Follow these waterways on board a comfortable barge or
river cruiser and encounter a quieter, more relaxed side of
Europe, revealed to you at a leisurely pace with attentive
personal service.
Each barge has its own décor, with interiors ranging from
humble French country to grand English manor styles.
Meals are included in every sailing, prepared by on-board
chefs and served in inviting surroundings.
Set out on a hotel sailing and join other like-minded
travellers or charter a private departure with family and
friends for a relaxing vacation on Europe’s waterways.
A&K offers a number of itineraries throughout Europe,
providing you with the opportunity to experience the local
history and culture of many regions:
Britain and Ireland
History seems to unfold before your eyes as you cruise
Scotland’s Caledonian Canal, England’s River Thames
or Ireland’s Loch Derg. From Macbeth’s castle and Loch
Ness in Scotland to Runnymede and Windsor Castle in
England and Ireland’s ring forts and a haunted castle, all
are available for up close and personal exploration.
The barge cruising experience.
Holland and Belgium
When you first think of Holland and Belgium, tulips and
chocolate may come to mind. Yet there is so much more —
streets are framed by medieval architecture, and precious
works by the Old Masters hang in the museums.
France
Just outside the arms of busy Paris, the Loire Valley is
home to tranquil flowing fields adorned with magnificent
châteaux. To the east, centuries-old wine estates and
German-inspired cuisine await in Alsace-Lorraine. In
Burgundy, see thriving vineyards and small villages that
dot the rolling hills, while Provence has inspired artists for
centuries with the scent of lavender fields and olive groves.
Germany and Central Europe
No destination is as peaceful and idyllic as the fairy tale
region of Germany or the historic, palace-laden cities
along the Danube. The blue-green carpet of Germany’s
Moselle region is best seen from a luxury barge as it
meanders down the river.
Regardless of the route you choose, your barge vacation
includes everything you need to make your holiday
complete, from guided sightseeing and entry fees to
transfers and accommodations to three delicious meals
daily with wine — always featuring the best local flavors
and ingredients.
scheduled deparTures: Hotel sailings listed in this
brochure require a minimum number of passengers or booked
cabins to operate. Please refer to the individual cruise pages for
details.
cruise rouTes: All cruise routes are subject to change
without notice. Some waterways may be subject to occasional
closures due to drought, storms, floods, canal or lock repairs
or other unforeseen circumstances that can make navigation
unsafe or impossible. In the unlikely event of such an occurrence,
the following conditions may apply: (1) if navigation must be
suspended, passengers will continue to be accommodated on the
stationary vessel and regular excursions will continue to be made,
with cruising to be continued as soon as possible; or (2) we reserve
the right to reverse the cruise route, cruise another waterway or
transfer passengers to another vessel of similar standard. The
Captain’s judgment on any action or inaction is considered final.
iTineraries: Accommodations are subject to change at any
any part of it, to make alterations to the itinerary or the program
inclusions as it deems necessary or desirable, and to pass on to
tour members any costs caused by delays or events beyond its
control.
special requesTs: Specific requests (such as bedding
requests and special dietary needs) should be advised at time
of booking. Please note that every effort will be made to secure
a special request; however, it cannot be guaranteed in advance
of travel.
prices and arrangemenTs: Quoted program
prices include planning, handling and operational charges and
are based on current rates of exchange, tariffs and taxes. A&K
reserves the right to increase program prices to cover increased
costs, tariffs, taxes and V.A.T. received after prices are published
and to reflect fluctuations in foreign exchange markets. A&K is
under no obligation to give a breakdown in costs involving any
Canal & River Cruising program. Modification of program content
to accommodate a smaller group size will not affect the published
program price.
early arriVal: A&K recommends that you arrive a day or
two before the start of your planned program to allow time to relax
and refresh after your journey. To help you prepare for the start of
your tour, A&K has negotiated favorable overnight rates at many
hotels; please ask for details at time of booking. Departing early
from the U.S. and Canada during the winter months is strongly
recommended, due to possible flight disruptions and cancellations
caused by inclement weather.
