SUNDAY: Meet in Dublin and transfer
to ‘Shannon Princess II,’ moored at
Athlone. After a champagne welcome,
take some time to relax on deck before
sitting down to a gourmet dinner.
MONDAY: You might enjoy an early
stroll along the nearby country lanes
before the barge sets out to cruise the
River Shannon’s beautiful inner lakes.
After lunch, visit Corlea Trackway
Visitor Centre with its excavated
wooden bog road built in 148 BC.
TUESDAY: ‘Shannon Princess II’
descends through Athlone Lock,
following the river through the callows,
a protected area of lush meadows
and grasslands. Moor at the ruins
of Clonmacnoise, a famous sixthcentury
university and early Christian
‘Shannon Princess II’ making her way along the River Shannon
settlement. Have lunch as the barge
cruises to Shannonbridge, a charming
walled riverside village. Later in the day,
visit the grounds of Birr Castle, family
seat to the Earl and Countess of Rosse.
WEDNESDAY: Today’s idyllic cruise
passes changing landscapes dotted with
ivy-covered ruins, medieval garrisons
and sleepy market villages. After Meelick
Lock, pause as Portumna Swing Bridge
is opened to allow access to Lough Derg;
moor at the foot of Terryglass. After
lunch at the quaint Derg Inn, visit Leap
Castle, Ireland’s most haunted house
and once a stronghold of the O’Carroll
family of powerful Irish princes. Learn
the castle’s history from Sean Ryan and
his family who, as they demonstrate, are
also talented traditional musicians.
