SUNDAY: Meet in Dublin and transfer<br />

to ‘Shannon Princess II,’ moored at<br />

Athlone. After a champagne welcome,<br />

take some time to relax on deck before<br />

sitting down to a gourmet dinner.<br />

MONDAY: You might enjoy an early<br />

stroll along the nearby country lanes<br />

before the barge sets out to cruise the<br />

River Shannon’s beautiful inner lakes.<br />

After lunch, visit Corlea Trackway<br />

Visitor Centre with its excavated<br />

wooden bog road built in 148 BC.<br />

TUESDAY: ‘Shannon Princess II’<br />

descends through Athlone Lock,<br />

following the river through the callows,<br />

a protected area of lush meadows<br />

and grasslands. Moor at the ruins<br />

of Clonmacnoise, a famous sixthcentury<br />

university and early Christian<br />

‘Shannon Princess II’ making her way along the River Shannon<br />

settlement. Have lunch as the barge<br />

cruises to Shannonbridge, a charming<br />

walled riverside village. Later in the day,<br />

visit the grounds of Birr Castle, family<br />

seat to the Earl and Countess of Rosse.<br />

WEDNESDAY: Today’s idyllic cruise<br />

passes changing landscapes dotted with<br />

ivy-covered ruins, medieval garrisons<br />

and sleepy market villages. After Meelick<br />

Lock, pause as Portumna Swing Bridge<br />

is opened to allow access to Lough Derg;<br />

moor at the foot of Terryglass. After<br />

lunch at the quaint Derg Inn, visit Leap<br />

Castle, Ireland’s most haunted house<br />

and once a stronghold of the O’Carroll<br />

family of powerful Irish princes. Learn<br />

the castle’s history from Sean Ryan and<br />

his family who, as they demonstrate, are<br />

also talented traditional musicians.
