BIT 3205 Database (DB) Programming (4 CU) Course Description: By the end of this course, the student will: Understand the use of SQLPlus and the SQL language with a fourth generation general purpose language to generate scripts, reports and database objects; Be able to write server side stored procedures and triggers; Apply the material in group database design and implementation of projects Indicative Content: In this course, students will design, critique and develop database applications using SQL with fourth generation languages and SQL embedded in third generation languages such as C. Topics include: modular design and development, module development, and compiling and linking. They also include use of triggers, embedded procedures, dynamic SQL preparation, and database cursors. Finally, exception and error handling and development with in a local and distributed application environment will be discussed. Reference Books: i. G. 9.0 DEPARTMENT OF NETWORKS 9.1 Introduction Traditional (isolated) IT solutions like desktop computing may have served us well in the past. But the growing need for ubiquitous computing in the 21st Century means these solutions can no longer meet the demands of the business communities. Today, users of computing technologies desire new ways of information access, and are demanding new computing models with secure access of services. To meet the emerging computing needs of the business and research communities, we think part of the answer lies in the well engineered data communication networks and software solutions. Well engineered solutions, full of scientific insights allow for more dynamic, flexible and cheaper solutions with limited malfunctions. With the growing demand of networked systems, the Department of Networks Faculty of Computing and IT, Makerere University has positioned herself as a number one centre in the region on data communication and software engineering teaching, research and consultancy. The department is internationally recognized for its work in the building IT human resource capacity in both the public and private sectors especially in universities. The department has trained thousands of professionals with theoretical and practical skills in the area of Data Communications Engineering, Network Administration, Mobile Computing, System Administration and Software Engineering. The team in the department continues to challenge itself for higher distinctions. The quest for better solutions to real problems has encouraged researchers in the department to establish strong partnerships with other institutions, private or public in the areas of Data Communication Networks, Mobile Computing, Digital security, Software Engineering and related disciplines. The collaborations of the department has established and aims at establishing focuses on human capacity building, optimal adaption of technology, research and development of new technologies. As a department, we are gratefully for the contribution made by our partners which include; NUFFIC, Nokia Inc., HP Inc., Uganda Police Force, Cisco Systems Inc., Google, MTN Uganda, New Vision Group and Rockefeller Foundation. 9.2 Bachelor of Science in Software Engineering Degree (BSc SE) Programme 9.2.1 Overview This programme offers a course of study leading to the B.Sc. in Software Engineering. The Bachelor of Science in Software Engineering Degree Programme will be offered to give an opportunity to prospective students to undertake training in Software engineering at a bachelor’s degree level within Uganda. With the growth of the ICT sector in Uganda, there is need to produce graduates who are job creators using the skills obtained in software Engineering. The objectives of the programme are; a) To produce graduates who are well-educated in the fundamental concepts of software engineering and able to continue their professional development throughout their careers.
