A mea~ns <strong>of</strong> identifying ihes circulating in th~e same tr~nch is<br />

1. Field glasses.--To be remembered: Field 4lasses <strong>of</strong> the<br />
highest~ poxver are not the most advaLntag~eous -r an <strong>infantry</strong><br />
<strong>of</strong>ficer, <strong>for</strong> unless considerazble dimensions are aven teojc<br />
glass, thus rendering the instrumient `cumberso~e, this enlargrement<br />
is ahvays obtained at the exp~ense <strong>of</strong> f/id <strong>of</strong> viewo andn<br />
clearnmess'. If tw~<strong>of</strong>~ield glasses have object g]hses <strong>of</strong>· the same<br />
diameter ·and one magnifies -twice ds much Is the 'o-ther,its<br />
cleaniuess viii -be banly one-fourth that <strong>of</strong> theweatker glass. A<br />
magnifying pow~e~r<strong>of</strong> 6 or 7 dliamneters, a field ~f100 to 130 mils,<br />
with correspondting clearness, gives, <strong>for</strong> the pismatic field glass,<br />
the best balance betwe~en the conflicting quaF~les.<br />
