COMPANY.'~~i<br />

The compnypm.-The company is the organizat~ion which appeals<br />

most to the soldier. It is the larg~est unit in which atll<br />

the grradies and-; men canl be personally a~cquainted. It is the<br />

smallest one that carn bse charged with elementary tactical<br />

operation.<br />

It has its. owin number, and its customs; it differs from its<br />

neighboring comzpazny. Also the captain is the real commander<br />

<strong>of</strong> his men; he is thre confidant o-f their troubles as well as the<br />

compulsory intermlediary <strong>of</strong> their requests. N\othing that concerns<br />

themn is done without his advice. He has, in a way, a<br />

universal rale, wrhich there is: no need <strong>of</strong> further defining here.<br />

Hle is res ponsible <strong>for</strong> every one in the company, and conseqyuently<br />

has entire chargre <strong>of</strong> all his subordinates.<br />

*The chief <strong>of</strong> platoonz.-The chief <strong>of</strong> platoon is purely a military<br />

chief; he is the head <strong>of</strong> the str~ongest unit that can be<br />

controlled by the voice and krept i~n view when deployed. The<br />

platoon is the elementazry group?in battle; it engages, fires, and<br />

figrhts as at unit; it always acts as if its power was concentrated<br />

under a sinzgle head-that <strong>of</strong> the chief <strong>of</strong> platoon. The rale<br />

<strong>of</strong> the latter is there<strong>for</strong>e most important.<br />

Halving under his orders only 50 men whoiu he never leaves,<br />

the chief <strong>of</strong> plat~oon is the only <strong>of</strong>ficer w~ho can know in detailthe<br />

character and aptitude <strong>of</strong> each one, and he is best qualified<br />

to judge <strong>of</strong> their daily morale and <strong>of</strong> the tactical situation,<br />

wihich he should always keep in mind (security, liaisons, observation,<br />

damag~e done to the enemy, etc.). On account <strong>of</strong><br />

his other duties, he should require that the noncommissionzed
