On a positive note some students reported that internet is primarily used for communication and that they are also trustworthy and sensible. Some direct quotes from students regarding what adults need to know about online activities were: “what they [kids] do and how they use it,” “what websites they [kids] go on,” “keep an eye on them,” “that they [kids] are mature and can be trusted,” and “that we are using it in a safe manner.” 38 LMCP Bendigo Region Report
PARENT SURVEY DEMOGRAPHICS The gender distribution of parents who responded to the survey was 58 (90.6%) female and 6 (9.4%) male. The average age was 45.3 (SD=6.6) with a range of 17 to 59 years. The average number of children living at home either full or part-time was 2.3 (SD=1.1), with a range of 1 to 6 children. Almost all (98.4%) the sample spoke English at home. One parent (1.6%) spoke Afrikaans. HOW THE INTERNET IS USED Parents reported that they most commonly used the internet everyday and this was most often from home. For most parents they used their computer in the study/office (45.3%), lounge room (32.8%), or kitchen (12.5%). Parents were asked about their own online activities with the aim of exploring the similarities and differences between students and parents. Figure 14.
